Lesbian Lawmaker Carries Baby For 2 Men

Christine Johnson x180 (Fair Use) I Advocate.com

Utah state Rep. Christine Johnson of Salt Lake City is 16 weeks pregnant, carrying a baby for a gay male couple, The Salt Lake Tribune reports. The paper says her pregnancy is “a first, no doubt,” for a Utah legislator.

Johnson, an out lesbian lawmaker, offered to be a surrogate for the men, close friends of hers, in April after they expressed frustration with the difficulty of adopting a child in Utah. State law forbids cohabitating, unmarried couples from adopting. It also prohibits same-sex couples from marrying.

“I can very much empathize with their desire to become parents and share their lives with and open their hearts to a child,” said Johnson, who is mother to a 17-year-old daughter. “I’m immeasurably grateful to be a mother.”

Johnson became pregnant in September. The baby is due on June 21. One of the men in the couple is the biological father and he will be the only one of men who will have legal rights as a parent—as Utah law will prohibit the other father from adopting the child.

... Which is why the Utah law is so peverse!!! It does harm to those children who need loving homes already AND creates conflict and uneeded burden to the same sex couples who wish to offer it to them!

I am personally conflicted when I hear of gay and lesbian couples going the surrogacy route in order to have children. One of the biological/evolutionary reasons for the existence of homosexuals in populations appears to be that they are able to raise excess offspring of heterosexuals in the population. Further, there are literally thousands and thousands of unwanted children and babies languishing in the foster system or available for adoption and gay couples are uniquely placed to lessen their suffering by offering them a loving home. While I understand the feeling that a person may wish to have a biological connection to their child, this is impossible for both parents in a same sex relationship and I would not want to feel my partner or I had a stronger connection to our child than the other which one could not help but feel on some level if one of us were the biological parent. As such it is my personal feeling that I would rather adopt than go through this sort of arrangement.

Dieter: That's not how Mormons operate. First they'll "graciously" use church funds collected from tithing and fast offerings to pay for the child's medical bills, then once the kid is healthy again they'll use their "generosity" as leverage for a guilt-trip conversion. "It's so nice to see Billy well again! Hey! You think he might enjoy cub scouts? Our church ward has a troop that meets every Wednesday, and we'd be happy to have him come."... "So we thought Billy might enjoy coming to church with us this Sunday, where he can share his miraculous recovery story with the members. Would it be OK if we brought him along?"... "Now Billy seems to want to be baptized, would that be OK with you?" ... "Now that Billy has be brainwashed... erm... I mean, taught obedience to the gospel as dictated by the Prophet, he wants nothing more to do with you guys. I'm really sorry, but it seems he thinks your dirty faggots and he's expressed a desire to be adopted into our LDS family"

I'm a bit confused. Is this woman planning on being an active parent to the child or will she essentially forfeit practical custody to the gay couple and merely be known as the egg donor? I think it would be cool if the kid could have three active parents, and this arrangement of gay and lesbian adults getting together to have children I think is a grand idea! Remember the old canard: "A child needs both a mother and a father!"? Well for every gay couple and lesbian couple that start some kind of co-op family, the resulting children will indeed have two mothers and two fathers.

Kip I agree that's what it says, but journalists should report facts not hunches. I'm just saying it shouldn't be shocking news in the first place.

So when the biological father loses his job, and his child gets sick, but cannot be treated because his partners insurance won't cover the child whos parents are not married, I guess then the logical thing to do is for those silly mormons to let the kid die. I mean it is FAR better for the kid to die...than get medical care by having his parents married. You betcha...hey..way to go religious freaks...you just reminded me why I don't believe in a fairy tale God who would rather a child die than to allow two men to marry. On the other hand,,,a straight couple can meet in a bar while drunk...have unprotected sex resulting in a pregnancy, get married by an elvis impersonator...sober up, and weeks later have an abortion because they changed their mind. get a divorce and then go on and marry as many other people as they want...but 2 men getting married and lovingly raise a child?...NEVER!!!! because that is immoral...yep you betcha! A just and loving God indeed!!!

Scott, the paper just suggested that this was a first for a Utah legislator. . . Probably a safe bet since there haven't been too many openly gay Utah state legislators. . . much less openly gay Utah state legislators who have surrogate mothers to gay couples. But true--if you're talking about the population as a whole, I'm sure there have been others in Utah.

I am truly proud of what you did. It helps other people to have a great and beautiful family. I am such ashamed it is not available here in my country, the Philippines, a predominant Catholic country. Yes it is hard to grow as an old gay man without having the right to adopt a child because of my sexual orientation.

How does their local paper know it's a first? Gay couples have been around as long as humans have been around it is nothing new. It may be personally something that journalist never was aware of but that does not mean it has never happened before.
