Newsom: Obama Inexcusable on Gay Rights

GAVIN NEWSOM X390 | ADVOCATE.COM

San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom has built his career on being outspoken — and now, in a new interview with The New York Times’ Maureen Dowd, he’s taking President Obama to task for his position on same-sex marriage.

“I want him to succeed,” Newsom said in the interview. “But I am very upset by what he’s not done in terms of rights of gays and lesbians. I understand it tactically in a campaign, but at this point I don’t know. There is some belief that he actually doesn’t believe in same-sex marriage. But it’s fundamentally inexcusable for a member of the Democratic Party to stand on the principle that separate is now equal, but only on the basis of sexual orientation. We’ve always fought for the rights of minorities and against the whims of majorities.”

Newsom also talks about being “pilloried” by the Democratic Party after he took a stand in San Francisco and allowed gay and lesbian couples to be married. He says it marked the beginning of the end of his career and that he is now thinking of retreating into the background and becoming a wine clerk.

Newsom is amazing and I would have been proud to have had him as my governor here in CA. bama doesn't give a rats ass about Gays and Lesbians. He has done nothing but try to pass a bad healthcare program that didn't go nearly enough to help Americans in need. We need a Public Option, we need 14th Amendment Rights for all Gays and we need someone with the courage of Newsom to lead CA. and America.

The gay community blamed Dr. Laura Schlessinger for the murder of Matthew Shepherd. Why can't we blame Newsom for the murder of the Bologna family?

You forget one thing when you compare blacks and gays, I can appear to be straight. My friends know I am gay, my facebook following knows I am gay, but my big truck driving neighbors don't know, they think my lesbian roommate is my wife/girlfriend. I am not hiding, but I don't need to skip up and down the street either. When my boyfriend visits, we go out to dinner or lunch or where ever we want, All these things would not happen if I were black living in the times of the more serious oppression to blacks. Heck in my truck driving neighborhood I probably wouldn't even be safe being black now a days. My neighbors would accept 5 of us living on their street before they would want one black person because they are racist country boys, but some of them are probably closet gay. Closet gay's will support you and leave you to peace, there are no closet blacks.

@Meremortal, unwittingly, raises the nature versus nurture argument... homosexuality = nature; bigotry = nurture! Regardless of what we learn as children, one day we grow up and embrace our God-given right of free will and make decisions as adults or we remain as children encumbered by the fallacies we were taught as children. Hence all the children we have in government. Think about the issues some of our friends have yet we continue to embrace them, warts and all; we need to see everyone around us that way in a live-and- let-live way… everyone doesn’t have to be ‘our’ friend, but respect for each person’s rights need to be embraced. Therefore, government should allow any two people who wish to enjoin (license of enjoinment) to do so (especially under the tax laws) and religious institutions should be allowed to marry or not marry (marriage certificate) whomever they wish. These are the civil rights that ALL MEN are guaranteed!

Jay from Tucson is simply misinformed about the horrors experienced by gay people in this country historically. In many ways, they were worse than those directed against people on the basis of race. While most gay people could "pass" and were not imprisoned for their activities, life with the knowledge that one is an unindicted criminal was not pleasant. Moreover, there is a heavy emotional cost in having to "pass" (as Blacks should know since many light-skinned Blacks passed as white, only to experience emotional scars as a result). In any case, civil rights is not solely a matter of skin color or sexual orientation or disability, etc. It is about equality under the law. I do not harbor the illusion that people necessarily learn from oppression, but I think I am more sensitive to the injustices and pain felt by others as a result of my status as a homosexual in a homophobic society. Black people should also be able to understand the pain of other oppressed people.

Somebody said here we are not fighting for our lives, so it is not the same as African American civil rights.. Personally, my partner and I have been fighting for our lives. My partner is not a US citizen, so we have no right to a life together in the US. Hello, that is fighting for our lives. Many just think inside the narrow box of their limited immediate personal circumstances. I am sick of hearing gay singles say they don't need marriage (yet) so just let it go. Take a wider perspective. Anyway, since when should civil rights be subject to the popular vote? How about a popular vote in 1835 to end slavery? No doubt the majority would have voted against it. After all slavery has a history of precedence for thousands of years in multiple cultures and is sanctioned by the Bible. So, democracy at its fair business; salvery is valid because 51% of the population supports it. And don't you dare challenge that! or we'll call you anti-american/anti-democrat.

Phillip. You keep bringing up the Bologna family and Newsom. If we arrested/convicted every politican for the policies they supported we would have the whole lot in prison. Though I do not agree with the scantuary philosophy there are others that agreed with him. Arrest them also and tell us their names. San Francisco City council for one. This is a sad event for sure, but so are many many other bad policies of government. You must have a dog in that hunt. Give it a rest.
