Watch Cynthia's Florida Fight

Award-winning out actress Cynthia Nixon wants Florida's ban on adoption by gays to end, and she went to Miami Beach earlier this month to lend her voice and celebrity to that cause.

The eloquent star of Sex and the City was at Miami Beach's Shore Club on January 9 to raise money for the American Civil Liberties Union, which is in the midst of a legal case that could repeal the 32-year-old ban, enacted in the days of Anita Bryant. In 2008 a Miami judge ruled a gay father could continue to raise his foster children, and a decision is expected soon on the state’s challenge of the Miami ruling in the third district court of appeals.

"Florida is the only state in the union that categorically bans gay men and lesbians from adopting children," Nixon said. "It's a tremendous crime."

This is important. The Florida adoption ban should get much more attention from the gay community. Florida is a national embarrassment - the ONLY state with a ban like this! Incredible. And Cynthia Nixon rocks.

Thank you for your help. Living in Florida is like living in the Dark Ages. Thank God, I'm only here temporarily. San Francisco is my real home & I truely left my heart there. I lived in FLA back in 76 & 77 when Anita was on her warpath. Not much has changed. Actually, the homophobia is worse now. And the blatant hatred towards Gays is unreal. It will take the Federal government to give Gays their rights in Florida, the state of FLA will never budge on Gay rights of any kind. Don't come here unless you absolutely have to, it's really a digusting place to live.
