Don Imus Supports Marriage Equality

Don Imus, the talk radio host who has earned his share of headlines for offensive statements, told Prop 8 attorney David Boies on Wednesday that he supports marriage equality.

Boies, co-counsel with Ted Olson in the case against Prop 8, appeared on Don Imus in the Morning and the discussion turned to the host’s own opinion, according to Freedom To Marry.

“In the course of the discussion, Don Imus expressed support for the freedom to marry, saying: ‘I supported—not that it’s important, but I support it [the freedom to marry] on the basis of the philosophy of my friend Kinky Friedman, who thinks that they [gay couples] have a right to be as unhappy…as anybody...It's great that you and Ted are doing this, and I hope you win, good luck.’”

Carlos- we should welcome any supporter of gay marriage. I know little about Don Imus but I appreciate his support as well as Howard Stern's long standing support.

Big whoop that Imus is on our side! Does anyone listen to him anymore anyway? Besides, his long-time rival, Howard Stern, has been for full LGBT equality for a long time. And more people listen to Howard than Imus. What if Kinky Friedman hadn't been for gay marriage? Would Imus still be for gay marriage?

Don Imus also said that the traditional justification used by proposition 8 supporters is ridiculous. I think he really means it.

Imus behaved like a real journalist. We seem to see so little of that.

Wow. This is the most surprising thing I've read about and watched in a while. I guess I assumed I knew how Imus would feel about this subject based on his past views on other issues. I was wrong. Mr. Imus was very respectful during the interview and I got the sense that he was sincere in his interest and support on overturning Prop 8.
