Indiana Senate Approves Marriage Ban

CARLIN YODER X390 (.GOV) | ADVOCATE.COM

The Indiana senate approved a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage on Thursday, but the measure introduced by Republican Carlin Yoder (pictured) appears on track to be defeated in the house.

The 38-10 vote in the Republican-controlled senate marked the fourth time the chamber has approved such a measure, reported the Indianapolis Star.

However, this latest measure includes a new restriction on civil unions.

“The amendment passed Thursday, Senate Joint Resolution 13, is more restrictive than the one considered in previous legislative sessions, because it not only would ban judges from allowing same-sex marriages, it also would prevent the legislature from allowing civil unions,” according to the Indianapolis Star.

Indiana law already bans same-sex marriages, which is one of the reasons the constitutional amendment is unlikely to gain traction in the house.

“House Speaker B. Patrick Bauer, D-South Bend, said the amendment is unlikely to receive a hearing this year, arguing the state's trial and appeals courts have upheld Indiana's marriage law,” reports the Indianapolis Star.

A constitutional amendment in Indiana must be approved by two separately elected legislatures before it heads to voters for consideration.

Bryan: I'm with you on your "GADAR" comment....This guy is "flaming faggot" (this is a "dyke" saying this..and proud of it) who is in the closet so deep that all his early childhood memories of tentative hot sex with boys has been purposely and with fear and loathing PUT IN THE BACK OF HIS CLOSET.....along with his pink dress. The guy is so gay he screams it. And I should know. I worked the door as security and bouncer in Provincetown, MA at the Gifford House. I know a gay guy when I see one. I'm certain that we will see him soon in the Provincetown summertime when all the closeted gays and lesbians visit and then leave back to their heterosexual world only to become ours (and their own)worst enemies.

Don't be surprised about this. Indiana is no stranger to discrimination & bigotry. It had the biggest Klan membership outside Dixie in the '20s. Republicans dominate most of the state's politics. Pres. Obama was the 1st Democrat to win the state since LBJ in 1964.

For any doubters, gay hatred and discrimination is very much alive and well in the midwest. These so called elected officials think that they are really doing a great job for the people. They are protecting the people from what? They aren't dealing with trying to start new businesses to create new jobs. Instead, they are using their smoke and mirrors to attract the attention of the bigots in their constiuency. It is too bad that most heterosexuals can't experience what we do on a daily basis. I wish that other minorities would remember how it was for them. Sadly, once you move up, you forget. 38 politicians in Indiana can go to hell.

Well I'm sad to know that my homestate has passed this, but it does'nt surprise me.I do have to say though my area is'nt a bad place to live being out so anyone in the closet may have alot of resons to be there not just b/c of living here. And really if we want the same rights we have to get away from redefining/exspanding the definition of marriage which is a religious thing and focus on the rights and the fact that gov is not equally applying those rights to all.

I have lived in many places throughout the country since leaving Indy in the early '90s. I have always boasted to friends that no matter where I live, I will always be a HOOSIER at heart. For the first time in my 60 years, I am embarrassed and ashamed to say I am from Indiana. Perhaps if I had lived there for the past twenty years, the oppressiveness would have gotten to me sooner.
