Lady of the Night

After coming out as a lesbian in 2006, Batwoman finally gets her own comic book series -- and this time, she's out, proud, and here to stay.

Katherine "Kate" Kane -- the buxom billionaire heiress by day and sexy crime fighter Batwoman by night -- is back, returning to comic books with her own series in Detective Comics #854. Oh, and in case you haven't heard by now, she's also a lesbian. "She's out and proud," says the comic's writer Greg Rucka. "The only thing she has to hide is what she's doing at night in costume."

The character of Batwoman was first introduced to the comic book world in 1956 as a romantic sidekick to Batman. But she and DC Comics really made headlines in 2006 when the latest incarnation of the character revealed her sexual orientation in the limited weekly series 52. In the comic, we learn of her past relationship with Det. Renee Montoya, a formerly closeted lesbian who was outed by Rucka back in 2003. Batwoman has rarely been seen since, but she is finally taking center stage with Detective Comics #854, which debuted on June 10 with planned monthly installments for one year.

Rucka, 39, is a popular comic book writer who has been writing stories for legendary heroes for more than a decade, among them DC's Wonder Woman and Marvel's Elektra (Daredevil's lethal lover) and hirsute Wolverine of X-Men fame. Rucka also was key in introducing the lesbian Batwoman to the DC universe three years ago.

"Kate's queer -- period. There is no coming out here," says Rucka. "This isn't an issue of, Oh, how do we do this? DC's wanted to bring back Batwoman as a new character, and she is going to be gay. That was there in the mission statement from the start."

Rucka has teamed up with artist JH Williams III, 43, whose cinematic and innovative anime-inspired drawings, full of moody reds and blacks, have also appeared in Promethea, a mystical series created with The Watchman 's Alan Moore. For Batwoman's latest debut, Rucka and Williams have created a take-no-prisoners warrior woman who is a touch of a daddy's girl at heart. And like many comic book heroines, she is very sexy, an intoxicating redhead on a tricked-out bat cycle, decked out in red boots, billowing cape, and her never-leave-home-without-it bat utility belt. (To fans of the camp classic, I'm sorry to report that she no longer carries a bat purse.)

"Why does the sexuality of a "cartoon" character have to be assigned. Do we know the sexuality of bugs bunny, tweety bird or Bullwinkle moose ?? Talk about "agenda" , its a cartoon for Christs sake!" Two things: 1) Research. Helps you to not look like a total ass when joining a conversation about someting you know nothing about. 2) You're an ass.

Hulkling and Wiccan from Young Avenegrs are two gay male characters in a relationship. Karolina Dean from Runaways is also gay. And in a relationship with Xavin, who is a Skrull (an alien race, but Karolina is also from another alien race, it reads better) and has been both male and female. Anole is another gay character from the X-Men. Just listing some other gay characters all of whom are teens.

Comic books are different then cartoons. You didn't see Bugs Bunny having sex or pursuing relationships, a common thing in the modern American superhero comic.

gfd, yes, Colossus of Ultimate X-Men was revealed as gay, but that series has recently ended as part of the Ultimatum cross-over arc. I'm not sure if there are plans to revive the title or not. He was paired with Northstar who was gay in both the regular X-Men books as well as the Ultimate X-Men series. Marvel also had a 5-issue series on their MAX imprint, Rawhide Kid, that featured a gay male lead.

FYI a single run comic from Dark Horse published in 2001 titled Wannablessedbe centered around the lesbian couple Willow and Tara from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was followed up with Wilderness 1 and 2 which again chronicled the two witches adventures. Kudos to DC for putting a lesbian superhero in the mainstream but Joss Whedon, Amber Benson, Chris Golden and Darkhorse have been doing it for quite some time. Let's also not forget that most recently Buffy the Vampire Slayer herself was involved in a lesbian relationship in the Season 8 comics. Lesbianism has also been a key issue (or nonissue) in Runaways and Y the Last Man. I am a lesbian and love comics. I am also not ashamed to admit that I love attractive women in comics. Everyone needs a hero. That's the whole idea and driving force behind the comic industry - cool costumes and super powers. But for the most part, it is about time we got the spotlight.

If Hugh Jackman of the X-Man was gay I would worship his Cock and Ass forever. OK Yes I'm a fan of Wolverine and I worship him If they find another actor to play the role I would be devastated. We have tooooooooo many people playing Batman and Superman. Have him make a couple more movies and then we can watch the reruns until we get sick of them. This time I want to see more Man Bulge and his awesome hot round eatable bubble butt .... WOOF!!!!

It's not just 'cartoons' for Christs' sake. If you really look at the content, artistry, research and attention to detail in keeping these characters consistent, alive and fresh, they're more than just animation. I'd suggest reading a few of the more modern and elaborate graphic novels and series that have been put out in the past 20 years. Watchmen. Batman: Dark Knight. 300. Batman: Arkham Asylum. The Sandman. Swamp Thing. Sin City. The characters in these and more than just "Bam! Pow!" comics. Even the mainstream comics have some meat to them nowadays, dealing with more modern situations. And we - as Gays and Lesbians - are definitely at the forefront now more than ever. Let's not be so critical about the 'straight' authors... what if they 'get it right' and their portrayal is accurate? Do we then backhand complement them? Let's wait and see. :)
