Brüno and His Discontents

Sacha Baron Cohen's latest satire on Americans and their beliefs holds a mirror to society while making the handfuls of gays squirm in their seats.

I first saw Brüno on television. He floated over an audience watching the MTV Movie Awards dressed in what I think really, really gay angels might wear for a night on the town in heaven. He waved, lost control, and landed upside-down on Eminem. What was squeezed into his jockstrap in flight rested on either side of the rapper's nose for a chaotic moment before the rapper tossed the inverted gay Austrian fashion authority from his face and stormed up the aisle in a huff while millions at home either laughed or crooked their heads, wondering if it was all real.

Cohen's latest ruse, like Borat , could land on July 10 in similar fashion. Cohen courts controversy in Brüno with expertly tweezed eyebrows, Zac Efron hair, and a rump fresh from the salon.

Brüno takes the summer movie theater, an air-conditioned escape where full-bladdered toe-steppers apologize repeatedly and the chatty are snubbed out like cigarettes, and flips it to a seated chaos.

The beverages that once passively passed from cup to straw to mouth fly out of their hosts with torrents of a screaming laughter so consuming and rare it leaves sore, tearing, and avoiding the eyes attached to the head where your mouthful of soda landed three rows in front. It's often that damn funny.

But gay audience members may switch from trying to catch their breath to holding it. Brüno is America's mirror, mirror on the wall reflecting the none-too-fair snap reactions of its people -- a rhinestone-studded pink elephant in a house divided over the movement to fully socialize a stigmatized population of people. It forces characters in the movie and people who watch it to confront their feelings on gay culture. How effective this is varies from scene to scene.

If anything, Bruno exposed how ignorant people are towards gay people. Bruno was essentially a reality check to everyone, even gay people. A very blatant, disturbing and kinda funny reality check. I think Cohen is a genius for doing this. And plus, he's laughing all the way to the bank so jokes on you.

I love Bruno because he does things I only wish I could do to straight people that I have little respect for (which would be most straight people). I felt bad for some of the people in Borat, but not for a single one in Bruno.

Baron Cohen is not exposing homophobia; he's exploiting gays for cash. Bruno is Amos 'n Andy for gays. We should stop trying to justify negative gay stereotypes as entertainment. The same old jokes at our expense are especially insidious during this critical time in our civil-rights struggle. Boycott this film.

Well I saw Bruno on Sat, and can I tell you it's Hillarious! I mean if we can't laugh at satire what's the point? Sure Bruno does not represent all gays well, but I think he does represent the racist gays that are often commenting on articles on this website. If you queens don't like the mirror image please do not see this movie. However for those of us who have ever been hurt by your racist rants..this movie seems like sweet payback!

I went to see Bruno because I really liked Borat. Well... Bruno is a disaster - its garbage. I left after about 30 minutes and received a refund - as did about a third of the people in the theatre. At least we dont have to worry about another movie of this type - people just dont fall for this 'humor' anymore. It was very apparent that "Bruno" was trying very hard to make the jokes work - and they didnt. He was looking for the same success he received from Borat and didnt get it. Oh well - at least he still has the success from Borat.

I just got out of watching Bruno, and our whole theatre seemed to enjoy it. This is not to say that during certain points of the film I was ready for the next scene, but overall, the movie fulfilled its purpose: to shock us and poke fun at stereotypes and prejudices. Some of the situations were genius at exposing homophobia. Anyone who thinks Brüno is a step backward simply wasn't viewing the movie from the right lens (or the joke was on them in the first place).

I laughed until my sides split at Borat. Just saw this movie and it left me depressed and angry. This movie is very bad for gays. The plot line of him adopting a baby was horrible set a horrible precedent for gay couples trying to adopt and raise kids. The portrait of gay relationships was vicious. It gets worse from there. If a movie about blacks was made that hit this man stereotypes, or about Jews, there would be rioting in the streets and this film would be shut down. We should shut this film down and make this guy Cohen pay for his damage to our community.
