Love Bites for Twilight's Gay Fans

Gay fanpires are sure to flock to New Moon, but with questions lingering about author Stephanie Meyer and the cash she gives to the Mormon Church, Mike Albo wonders if we'd be better off tying a clove of garlic around our necks.

NEW MOON 2 X390 (COURTESY) | ADVOCATE.COM

COMMENTARY: New Moon is almost here. You may not be one of the bloodthirsty “fanpires” who have been camping outside of theaters waiting for the premiere on Monday, but still it’s hard not to be as giddy as a teenage girl about it. Breaking records in advance ticket sales, its stars plastered on every magazine cover and mindless website, the Twilight follow-up is turning out to be a gigantic pop culture tidal wave that has the potential to engulf Titanic and every previous blockbuster in box office sales.

Gay and lesbian audiences are certainly not immune to the hype, and who can blame us — the cast is chock-full of heartthrobs who are impossible to ignore. Not only do we have Robert Pattinson with his wintry beauty and red, red Kool-Aid lips, but there is Kellan Lutz with his lusty frat-boy bod, Taylor Lautner’s sweet face and concertedly ripped physique, and a slew of steamy minor roles (like crazy-cute Peter Facinelli’s Daddy Cullen or Edi Gathegi’s stern, dreadlocked Laurent). Even Kristen Stewart is turning out to be a hot goofy tomboy object of desire — the Shane we have all been longing for since The L Word finished its run.

Moody, alluring, even a little campy, the Twilight saga has all the sexy requirements it takes to go down in the gay — ahem — annals of pop culture history. It’s not hard to see a future of Taylor Lautner shirtless montage videos playing in a loop at gay bars ... or even an Edward Cullen drag king contest.

The only problem is — it’s not really that gay. At all. A quick scan of the books (it doesn’t take that much time) finds absolutely zero confident, out gay or lesbian characters. Maybe there is a scene or two where guys get all half naked and fight with gushing testosterone, or a girl strokes Bella’s hair, or an androgynous vampire in Italy acts suggestive — but there is nothing more.

This lack of pink makes sense once you know that the author of the mega-popular series, Stephenie Meyer, is a devout Mormon who is a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and graduate of Brigham Young University — not exactly the most gay-friendly environment.

Meyer's religious background hasn’t escaped the gay blogosphere. There have been some intelligent, penetrating questions among many sites about the motivations of Meyer and the subsequent film projects — and whether this is something we gays and lesbians should be obsessing over. It brings up an interesting quandary: In our current political state as a minority, just how are our dollars and sexual energy being used?

why would gay men be fans of a sexless mormon scribed vampire novel poulated by tween hunks and vaguely tomboyish girls when we have True Blood - a real sexed up, suprecharged allegorical vampire series that says more to the gay population than any of the twilight books/films ever have? There is an essentially erotic subtext to vampire mythology and is also a allegory of sorts to the gay existance - all of which is in full display in True Blood. The Twilight novels ignores all the mythological subtexts, and offers nothing concetely erotic for adults. In view of all this, and the fact that the author is devoutly mormon and no doubt conributes her share to the mormon chuch - why on earth would any self respecting gay adult be a fan of any of the twilight books or films? The premise that this is the case was totally fabricated for the article and can't be at all true.

I also pay my fair share of taxes. So I guess because of that I am pissing all over my brothers and sisters because I do not want to be thrown in jail for tax ivasion. She has already received her money when Summit bought the rights to make the movies. She has ALREADY tithed the money. So what if she feels this way, the actors portraying the characters do not feel this way and they will make money off of the royalties from ticket sales. See it all washes out in the end.

Jay from NW Arkansas: You claim to be in the medical field and then mis-state HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). You claim you and your partner are not denied any benefits or rights that a "marriage" in the US would grant. Is NW Arkansas on another planet than our planet Earth? Maybe Arkansas has better laws and benefits than Colorado, but I seriously doubt it. As to "Twilight," I have intentionally avoided the books and movies as I was aware the author was a devout Mormon, and therefore would be tithing at least the standard 10% on her GROSS income. I was born and raised Mormon; my male partner and I would not be welcome to attend church. I figured that out more than twenty years ago. If you don't want your money ending up in the coffers of the church, don't support this woman.

Jay - There are between 700 and 1000 rights that are denied to gay couples that heterosexual couples take for granted. Obviously the advocate post size limits are not going to allow me to post all of them, however, here are a just a few that you are not likely to think of: Spousal Immunity from being forced to testify, tax free property transfers, and automatic next of kin treatment. I'm going to leave off on that list to mention that my partner and I have been together for 9 years and we encounter problems with taxes, health insurance, property rights, on a semi-regular basis. For you to claim that your obviously somewhat sheltered life is an indication that we as a group are not discriminated against and denied basic rights that our heterosexual counterparts enjoy without question is simply...offensive.

I saw "Twilight" on DVD at the recommendation of a gay friend and thought it was horrible, with a cliche plot and shallow characters. Maybe that's because I had already become accustomed to "True Blood," but who knows?

Jay, You are a brainwashed idiot! You have to have the RIGHTS in order for them to be taken away. There are hundreds of RIGHTS not given to gay people that are given to straight people. What planet do you live on? Get a clue dude. You are living in some alternate universe. Backwards, uneducated on the facts and posting is a bad mix. Rush Limbaugh must be your messenger boy.

OK GAYS no rights have been taken away from you other then getting married. what is the big deal on getting married, other then some of the joint tax stuff. You have all the same rights as the Straights. You are still a citizen of the USA. My partner and I have bought 2 cars together, we have utilities together in our names we have been together 10 yrs. oh and as for medical rights if your partner claims you on his/her list then you are not going to be denied information or be removed from the room. I work medical I know all about HIPPA, there is also the wonder thing called a Power Of Attorney. A Power of Attorney lets you appoint someone you trust to manage important financial and legal matters on your behalf. You can choose to have it take effect immediately or only go into effect in the event of illness or incapacitation. You are only attacking Meyers from being LDS. What about the Perz or countless members of congress that don't support Gay Marriage. Its all about LDS

I read the first Twilight book, skimmed the second and tried skimming the third before just skipping to last chapter. The stories are just romance novels re-aged for a younger audience and are shallow and boring. The first movie was even harder to watch than the book was to read. Most of my gay friends are of a similar opinion. Eye candy guys are everywhere so there is no point in wasting time or money on Twilight series books or movies. However when I found out Orson Scott Card was rabidly anti-gay it was a much harder question about whether to support him by buying his books because I've so enjoyed reading them, but ultimately decided to never again buy anything he's written.
