Swedish supergroup Abba was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a ceremony Monday night at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

According to The New York Times, “Only half of Abba was on hand for its award, the first for a Scandinavian band: Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson, who named Swedish folk music, German schmaltz and John Philip Sousa among the group’s influences. Faith Hill belted out ABBA’s ‘The Winner Takes It All,’ with Mr. Andersson leading the backup band on piano.”

Also inducted in the performers group were Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, the Hollies, and Iggy Pop and the Stooges.

David Geffen, who founded Asylum, Geffen, and Dreamworks Records, was inducted into the hall of fame for music executives. The gay billionaire told the audience “I have no talent,” according to the Times.

Joseph, I have already created my own rock and roll hall of fame, and I don't need millions of dollars, a mega-hall or celebrities. And I guarantee you that ABBA is not among its inductees. And I daresay many other rockers would concur with my selection of inductees before they would the offical nominees.

So Brad, here's my opinion: You are free to create your very own rock'n'roll hall of fame and induct only those whom you deem worthy of the honor. Then, you're free to spend the millions of dollars in buying the structure to house said hall and spend the millions of dollars needed to make the induction ceremonies worthwhile by getting the inductees to appear and getting other celebrities to perform the inductees' music. Do you see where I'm going with this? Bear in mind, too, that many of the inductees have historically been "rock'n'roll" only tangentially. Elvis Presley (the very "King of Rock'n'Roll") started off as a country performer and only had about 2 years of "REAL" rock'n'roll, and I dare say ABBA is every bit as "rock'n'roll" as the Beach Boys ever were (the Beach Boys were inducted right along with the Beatles, the Supremes, the Drifters and Bob Dylan--back in 1988).

In that case, it should be called the "Popular Music Hall of Fame." ABBA was a rock group like Captain Kangaroo was an adult-oriented show.

Neither are Otis Redding (1989), Bobby Darin (1990), Etta James (1993), Joni Mitchell (1997), Bonnie Raitt (2000), Prince (2004), Madonna (2008)... the list goes on. "Rock and Roll" is an umbrella term for a myriad of popular musical styles. Congrats to ABBA and the rest of the current inductees.

ABBA was not a rock & roll band. They were a pop group.
