Bono to ET: "I Always Felt Male"

Chaz Bono discusses his gender-reassignment surgery exclusively with Mary Hart in a two-part interview set to air tonight and tomorrow on Entertainment Tonight.

Speaking at his home in Los Angeles, Chaz talked with Hart about the effects of taking male hormones, the extent to which he plans to undergo surgeries, and the impact of his decision on his family, including his famous mother, Cher.

“I always felt like the male from the time I was a child,” Chaz told Entertainment Tonight. “There wasn't much feminine about me. I believe that gender is something between your ears, not between your legs. That is something I discovered in the early '90s. It was just a long process of being comfortable enough to do something about it. I was turning 40 and I thought, it's now or never. I want to still feel vibrant and be able to enjoy my life in a male body and not wait until I am an old man."

Tune in to Entertainment Tonight on Thursday and Friday to catch the full interview with Chaz Bono, and read moreabout the interview here.

Being totally accepting of all "fringe" behavior and having been in our family culture ...I am aware that everyone and all forms of fringe culture are to be taken in by all of us. People who are gay and lesbian forget sometimes that they are still considered "fringe folk" and weird and not acceptable by the vast majority of human society ...even today in 2009. We cannot judge anyone's behavior even if we ourselves do not go in that direction. Having written that I proceed with that basis of context: I enjoy being of both genders: having a female body and a male temperment and male reference point. When I started getting a female body in 1967 and having my period I had what is today called "gender dysphoria" big time. I actually lookied at my self in the mirror with my new tits and said to myself: I guess I'm a girl after all. I never did get any hips and my tits are only a B cup(thankfully) but I had to navigate the male in a female body. I find it terribly interesting.

I saw the dual interview with Chas Bono recently. I was so proud of him for making his own statements and speaking for himself. I have tried to reach him through his website but I have had no luck. All the sites are just junk about his decisions. I am a heterosexual female and completely supportive of him!!!!!!!!!!!!!Can you please help me reach him or at least give him a message. I am so proud and supportive of him. Sincerely, Ruby Leagans

Well, I think Chastity's decision makes me uneasy. Sonny Bono would be doing revolutions, spinning in his grave.

You're not being very good to the name of John, which I happen to share with you, other John. Why not try accepting people as they are instead of following your own prejudices? You'll make more friends that way.

I think Chaz is incredibly brave. I am particularly struck by how he decided as he approached the age of 40, it was "now or never". That is how we should all live our lives because we're only here once. Congratulations Chaz for living your life with no regrets! You inspire me to do the same!
