Justin Comes Out on Ugly Betty

JUSTIN UGLY BETTY X390

The moment fans of Ugly Betty have waited four seasons to see is finally here. On Wednesday night’s episode of the ABC series, 15-year-old Justin (Marc Indelicato) comes out to his family.

Just a few episodes ago, Marc had his first same-sex kiss with his classmate Austin (Ryan McGinnis). They kissed again, and were spotted by Justin’s soon to be stepfather.

In Wednesday night’s episode, he enjoys a slow dance with Austin in front of his mother (Ana Ortiz) aunt Betty (America Ferrara) and pals Marc (Michael Urie) and Amanda (Becki Newton).

"I really am not doing this for myself. I'm doing this for everyone out there that doesn't have a person to talk to, that doesn't have a [mentor figure like] Marc St. James to chat with them," Indelicato told Us Weekly. "I went into [filming] saying this is history, we’re making history now, and I'm so happy that it happened."

What a gorgeous episode. Watch the clip - notice how Marc and Amanda are the last dancers to notice Austin and Justin. She says, "Don't cry. It makes you look like a girl." The writers and director made sure the viewer (at least me, and I bet a lot of people) would be tearing up at that point. Bastards, they're good. Too bad they didn't get to stretch the current season into one more - they're cramming a lot into the last episodes. On occasion I thought Ugly Betty stretched credulity a little too far in some ways, even in its supercampy melodramatic world, but that's just a quibble. It's the gayest thing that's ever been on network American TV in multiple ways and I think made a real cultural contribution. Sneaking the gay on Americans just looking for popular entertainment is a legitimate and important part of the whole picture of political/social activism. Meanwhile, Modern Family carries on and is making its own little contribution. Plus it's smart and funny.

At the end of this lovely episode my spirits were brought down when the announcer stated next week's episode is the last of series.

Whilst admirable of the Ugly Betty writers to include such a scene, and it is important to recognise the positive impact it can have on adolescents, I'd hardly call this "making history". Various UK and European TV shows, movies and stage plays have done similar over the past 20 years, and several Australia "soap operas" aimed at teenagers have also had "gay themes" - so this is hardly a first, but it is good to see the USA is finally catching up with the rest of the world ;) (quickly ducks for cover)

There are millions of younger closeted kids out there, and most have nobody to identify with. Many commit suicide or turn to drugs each year as a way of coping. Ugly Betty has done a great service to society ay large and changed lives for the better. I thank the producers.

Geez, it's about time. The kid is so gay he can't even walk "straight". Good for him and the show for having the balls to do it.

Am so happy to see this tonight. I am glad that ABC has finally changed and is allowing this episode to be aired. I remember way back when Ellen came out and it was a big deal. I specially like this because I too am a gay Latino, the only difference is that I stayed hidden in the closet for most of my life. Coming out of it was the best thing in life for me...

i can't think of a better representation of a latino babygay, since the first episode of the series. i hope he gets his own spinoff series with the superpowered, burly babydyke on Medium in which they team up to convert the church of scientology into a network of homeless queer youth shelters.
