Maddow: I'm Not on a Gay Crusade

Maddow Meet The Press x390 (Screen grab) | Advocate.com

Rachel Maddow tells TheWashington Post that being a lesbian is not what drives her high-profile coverage of issues like the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

Media columnist Howard Kurtz profiles the MSNBC host with great attention to how her sexual orientation impacts her treatment of guests like Lt. Dan Choi, who came out on The Rachel Maddow Show last March.

“As one of the few openly gay television anchors, Maddow has kept the spotlight trained on the contentious issue of whether service members known to be homosexual should face discharge proceedings, as Choi did after that interview,” writes Kurtz. “But she doesn't view herself as mounting a crusade.”

"We don't really treat gay issues differently than other issues," Maddow tells Kurtz. "The controversy, she says, is just ‘a great story.'"

Not that Maddow wants to hide her identity either.

"I can't do the show as a non-gay person,” she tells Kurtz. “I don't have that option."

The interview also includes discussion of whether Maddow sees her work as activism, which she denies, drawing a contrast between herself and competitor Fox News.

Asked for response, a Fox spokesperson told Kurtz, "These feelings that she experienced about Fox News didn't stop her from applying for a job here.”

"what America thinks" is not a particularly uplifting topic, and--especially in times of national illness--becomes a demonstration of what is often the worst about us.

Rachel Maddow will forever have my admiration and respect for her coverage of Uganda's gay genocide bill the Religious Right's involvement in it. She committed herself to an in-depth, factual account of the whole thing. She covered it when no one else had the balls to do so. Those U.S. government and religious leaders involved in the incident were called into public account because of her coverage. God bless you, Rachel!

Maddow is a self-righteous progressive viper, whenever I watch her I can see the venom dripping from her fangs. Her self-righteousness and hatred of conservatives, libertarians, traditional Americans and anyone who doesn't support her Obama-loving progressive agenda is obvious. Bill O'Reilly is an independent who's famous for no-spin interviews, I saw him interview Stewart and I'm glad he gave that bastard a hard time. Besides, Fox News has plenty of liberals and independents who watch while MSNBC is The Place for Bush Haters and Obama Lovers.

Bobby: Do you actually talk to people analytically about the issues. I don't get around to watching Olberman very often, but I watch Rachel, and she doesn't tell anyone what to think. In fact the first question she asks in almost every interview is "Have I gotten this wrong?" No one who wants to dictate reality poses that question. When I have watched Fox News they do dictate. The last interview between O'Reilley and John Stewart is a perfect example. Where as Rachel includes quotes, and video clips to give context and examples to the opinions and analysis she presents, O'Reilley didn't give a single example from Fox News to backup his arguments against some of Stewart's statements about them. Rachel has on occasion actually been told about a factual mistake, and corrected it on her show. Not called out publicly, been contacted privately and corrected it. Post a case, any case of Fox News doing that.

Rush is a pill popping very, very, rich guy who will do what's best for ME guy, & Beck is a crazy mormon! So I may improve their ratings! I thought I might agree on some issues, as I want whats best for everyone in this country, but these people are CRAZY!!! By the way I very much like Rachel Maddow. Shae is a smart & sassy lady! "Fox News have zero credibility in the eyes of almost everyone I know." Then everyone you know must be a liberal, seriously, try getting out of Chelsea or The Castro or whatever gay ghetto you live in and see how the rest of America thinks. Fox News is the #1 rated network among conservatives, independents and lots of democrats who would rather think for themselves instead of having Maddow and Olberman telling them what to think.

Fox News have zero credibility in the eyes of almost everyone I know. They've gone nuts and bolts ever since the 2008 elections. Comedy Central is now more serious than Fox News. So come on, who cares what Fox spokesperson has to lie - excuse me - to say.

Putting relevant policy topics that have to do with LGBT identity on the same level as policy topics that don't isn't activism. It's just good reporting, and most other news anchors don't do it. Rachel is showing 'em how good journalism ought to be done.
