Scientologists Deny Antigay Claims

The Church of Scientology is not antigay, says a spokesman in response to claims from Crash director Paul Haggis.

A spokesman for the Church of Scientology responded to public claims by Crash director Paul Haggis (pictured) that the church is antigay, saying that the church’s San Diego branch was incorrectly put on a list of Proposition 8 supporters.

Scientology spokesman Tommy Davis denied the charges Haggis made in a letter that found its way online, according to MSNBC.  Haggis recently left the church after many years, citing its support for the effort to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California.

“Church of Scientology San Diego had been put on a list of churches that supported Proposition 8 out in California,” said Davis, according to MSNBC. “It was incorrectly included and named when it should have never been on the list to begin with,” he said.

Davis added that Haggis wanted the church to take a more active political stance against Prop. 8, but the church is prohibited from doing so because of its tax-exempt status.

I don't support the tenants of Scientology at all, but for those of you saying it should be banned because its a "cult" - its no more cultish or any more weird than thinking Jesus is coming back. As far as their not participating because they are a non-profit - that's BS. Non-profits can't endorse candidates. They can take positions on issues and propositions. I work for one and we do it all the time and its totally legal.

Scientology is being deliberately misleading--as usual. That religion *is* antigay, and whether or not it contributed to Prop 8's passage, Haggis is saying it didn't come out against the homophobes, and he said that's one of the reasons he's leaving.

Why of all the churches that support the anti-equality and bigoted rhetoric are they supposedly the only ones afraid to loose their tax free status? Something sounds very fishy here in their response. I wonder what it actually is?
