A Gay Marriage World Cup Final

The national soccer teams of the Netherlands and Spain will face off in the World Cup final Sunday. No matter who wins, the tournament champion will be a country that provides full marriage equality to its gay and lesbian citizens.

The Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage in 2001. Spain, a predominantly Catholic country, followed suit in 2005. And World Cup host country South African also provides full marriage equality.

Change.org reports:

"Either way, no matter who you'll be rooting for, you'll be rooting for a country that recognizes full marriage equality for all of its citizens. They say God works in mysterious ways, right? Maybe this is her/his way of sending the world (and all of its anti-gay legislators) a nice, subtle message."
