Not Gay, Not Lesbian, But...

From Gaga to Fergie, Real World's Mike Manning to Michael Urie, The Advocate looks at celebs who like it both ways.

NOT GAY NOT LESBIAN MAIN X390 (ALL FAIR USE) | ADVOCATE.COM

Megan Fox says there is no question in her mind that she's bisexual -- she'll sleep with men, but she would "never date a girl who was bisexual because that also means they sleep with men, and men are so dirty." Mika says, "call me bisexual, if you need a term for me." Lady Gaga says she's had relationships with women, Ke$ha has slumber parties with her girlfriends... even Real World DC star Mike Manning says he's looking to date a guy right now, but leaves the door open for hooking up with his ex-girlfriend again.

Being gay or lesbian can still be considered taboo, but being bi -- or queer, pansexual or any other number of offshoots from the LGBT acronym -- is suddenly "in fashion." On the following pages, The Advocate takes a look at some of the most vocal celebs to open up about their lust for the same-sex.

Sexuality is very simple; it can be summarized in one word. COMPLICATED. It is important that we afford all individuals the respect of acknowledging their right to self-determination and self-identification. In our present society that demands categorization and choosing a "definitive" label, Bisexual as an identity is imbued with so much judgement. It is no one's right other than ourselves to define who we are, even if that label remains beyond definition. Grow up and get your noses out of other peoples' beds. Straight society gay culture often rejects those brave enough to label themselves bi . Think of the courage it requires to stand free of either and say that "I am other". Embrace your other minded brothers and sisters. Who do you say that I think I am?

People often speak about bisexuality like it can only be one way...I identify as gay but I could be defined as bisexual. I'm a woman and I prefer to be in long-term emotional/sexual relationships with other women. I have been in both long and short/term emotional/sexual relationships with men too, but its not my preference. I wouldn't call myself bi because automatically people would think that means I prefer men but only like women as a "sideline" and have a hard time thinking of the possibility of it happening the other way around.

    Comment:

Perhaps there's too much emphasis on the label itself. If calling yourself bisexual is seen as a cool or trendy thing to do, then celebrities after some attention will claim bisexuality. I'm bisexual and to me it means I am attracted sexually to both men and women. I'm currently in a stable relationship with a woman but I've had relationships with both sexes and have not been ashamed to be out in public with my partner whether they be male or female, that is what being bisexual is to me. I've been told by gay friends in the past that I'm in denial and I'm actually gay, one in particular tried to split me up with my girlfriend saying it was 'unfair' on her and that bisexuality 'did not exist'. Without the concern about labelling sexuality, people would not get so frustrated about it.

And what about the guy who only likes to fuck animals. Other than "into beastiality" or "sick" or whatever, how do you label him?

@TJ No, you said she doesn't even identify as gay or bi and said she went back to straight. She does not identify as straight just because she's with a man any more than Ani Difranco.

    Comment:

Obviously from these comments there is still a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about bisexuality. I don't feel a strong need to personally define my sexual orientation for myself but when asked I declare myself to be bisexual (or ambisexual) as this seems most accurate. However I've received a lot of flak from so-called friends who think I just couldn't admit to being gay. I am perfectly comfortable being referred to as "gay" but it doesn't seem entirely accurate.
