The Anatomy of Jack Wrangler

John Stillman -- a.k.a. "Jack Wrangler," one of the first gay porn superstars -- opens up with The Advocate about the new documentary on his life, Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon.

John Stillman got his start in show business in the mid '50s at age 9 when he starred with America’s tap-dancing sweetheart, Eleanor Powell, in the religious-themed TV show Faith of Our Children. Now he’s a producer and director of Broadway musical reviews and is married to Margaret Whiting, chart-topping singer of the 1940s and 50s.

But in between being an emerging religious star and a happy husband, Stillman was known as Jack Wrangler, the rugged blond stud who exploded on the gay porn scene in its 1970s golden era. His charisma, which extended to an acting ability beyond the sex scenes, and his unique gift to be able to deliver a money shot on cue made him in demand by the adult film industry. So much so that when he decided to make a shocking and unprecedented foray into heterosexual porn, he continued to prosper until his retirement in the mid 1980s.

Stillman’s rich life story is explored in the new documentary Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon, produced and directed by Jeffrey Schwarz.

The Advocate:While you’ve never fully escaped the fame you established as a porn star, with this documentary coming out you’re back in that spotlight. How is that for you?
Stillman: I was involved in two very legitimate projects when this whole thing came up, and I wasn’t sure it was a good idea. I’m never sure anything that I do is a very good idea! It just happened. I think my whole life has been a “happening.” One of my parents said, “Just open yourself up to all the wonderful possibilities,” and I always have. I get in a lot of trouble, but I have an awful lot of fun. [Laughs]

When were you first aware of your homosexuality?
I was about 12…or 10…or 9 or 8. I saw a man with his shirt off. My father [TV producer Robert Stillman] was shooting Bonanza at the time. I was very attracted to Michael Landon, of course -- everyone was. I know I got caught by my father around 10.

Got caught doing what?
Masturbating! [Laughs] I had a big walk-in closet -- a huge walk-in closet, and --

You were literally in the closet? Masturbating?
I was literally in the closet. [Laughs]

Back in 1980 my partner at the time and a friend met Jack Wrangler and Margaret Whitting at a Restaurant called Backstage on Broadway. Our friend Tom recognized Margaret for her singing and I recognized Jack for his porn films. Our friend Tom stopped Margaret as they were leaving the restaurant and asked her about some lyrics that her father had written. I was just star struck at Jack Wrangler just standing there. I had ordered duck for the first time but when it came I couldn't eat, I was so star struck. Anyway, his passing and my memory of that brief moment almost thirty years ago has taken my back to those days that I miss so much. My condolences to Margaret and their families.

On reading these comments some being great others down right hurtful. I had the privilege of working as Jacks Assistant in the early 70s. He was the most gracious and charming men Ive ever worked for. He will be missed for his film work, but mosty for for his class. Good Bye dear Jack I sure as Hell will miss you.

I can't wait for the day when labels are obsolete. They are useful for dating but otherwise I think they are divisive and often misleading. How about using not straight or queer?

I remember Jack Wrangler so well from the 1970's when I was in my early 20's. I came out because he was having such fun and great sex on the screen. If I had looked like Jack and had his charisma, I could have conquered the world. As it was, I had a pretty good bite of it. Jack, for the middle aged gays of the U.S., would you ever consider making one more movie? And, I mean, with a man of your age. Couldn't the lovely Margaret give us that?

Unfortunately I was too young to know of Jack Wrangler in his day of makin pornagraphy. I was a kid in the 70's. I just recently discovered him through one of the rags that discusses this new DVD that is in release and chronicles his life. I feel like ive stumbled onto a gem. From what Ive seen, man oh man.....the guy was and is still a beautiful lookin man. Id love to be able to get a hold of some of his videos. Not sure If they're available. Actually Id love to get a hold of him in person and just love him. Id say even in his older age, he still good lookin. He really does have alot of charisma. It still shows even in his older years now.

Why are people so damn hung up on labels: gay, straight, biseexual, homosexual!! Jack Wrangler has lived through many sexual lifestyles according to your commmentators. Actually, he's living a life. Obviously, his wife doesn't seem to be bothered by any of the labels, so why should any of you? Furthermore to use Stillman/Wrangler's choices as political fodder is perhaps the most inane comment of all time. The man is successful privately and personally; now he's continuing his success in the legitimate-theater realm. Fine! Congratulations! I wish him all the success he will garner. By the way, no one's made any adverse comments about Stillman; he is extraordinarily well liked professionally. You cannot say the same for most of our "hetero, he-man" stars.

    Comment:

John Stillman can call himself gay but he's really bisexual and just in denial about it, since he's not homosexual since he's at the very least sexually and romantically attracted to women since he wound up doing heterosexual porn and falling in love with a woman and marrying her. Everyone knows the "gay for pay" actors are really bisexual and so were the "straight for pay" actors in the 1970s and 1980s.
