Michael Moore’s latest installment makes us question capitalism while Beth Ditto makes us wish we could sing as powerfully as she.
Film
- Capitalism: A Love Story: He’s tackled the downfall of the U.S. car industry in Roger & Me, school violence in Bowling for Columbine, and the broken health care system in Sicko. But with Capitalism: A Love Story, Michael Moore is likely to piss off his biggest audience yet -- any American out to make a buck. The film is predictably one-sided, but as usual, Moore spins a disturbing truth -- one that, in these times of economic turmoil, has never rung more true.
- Whip It: Drew Barrymore steps behind the cameras for her directorial debut, which is basically about girls kicking ass and taking names. Juno’s Ellen Page stars as a frustrated Texas teen who gets her kicks after joining an all-girls roller derby team in Austin. Barrymore has a role in the film and, as predicted, the girls get suitably bruised. But a slew of laughs will be had along the way, and the “kick-ass tough girl” theme is sure to be a favorite among ladies who like ladies.
-The Invention of Lying: Jennifer Garner, Tina Fey, and the rest of the people in this fictional town can’t tell a lie -- and that usually results in their saying things people don’t want to hear. Which is why it's such a genius idea when Ricky Gervais discovers how to lie. Truly hilarious humor and a top-notch cast make this a must-see.
