Otalia in Love on Guiding Light ?

Women in love: Are Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia becoming daytime's new "it" couple?

First there was Brangelina, and now comes Otalia. The blossoming romance of Olivia and Natalia on the CBS's long-running daytime drama Guiding Light has been the buzz of the soap world for weeks. The groundswell of support for the couple has given birth to the now-famous acronym. Daytime fans and the LGBT audience have been curious and compelled to watch the daily drama unfold -- two women who have never before been in a same-sex relationship are finding their way toward love with each other.

Currently, the struggles of these two mainstay characters to identify and come to terms with what and how they feel for each other has even mainstream press keeping tabs on the show. Last week Otalia made the Must List from the editors of Entertainment Weekly.

But is there a long-term commitment to the characters and the story? Is there another man on the way to put a stop to the train that's left the station? Advocate.com spoke exclusively with Daytime Emmy Award-winning actress Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia just as Otalia's world is about to be rocked this week on Guiding Light.

Advocate.com:What was your reaction when you were told that they were going to be pairing Olivia with Natalia?
Jessica Leccia: For me personally, that I would be working with Crystal was exciting, and it was overwhelmingly positive.
Crystal Chappell: This story has been in the works since January of 2008 and it was told to us then. I am open to whatever story they want to tell, and it's certainly something I have never done before. It was just a matter of being patient and seeing how and when it was going to happen.

It's been interesting to see how the romance is developing. These are two women who were originally enemies, moved in together out of necessity, and became friends. Is there a moment in Olivia's journey when she realized she had deeper feelings for Natalia?
Crystal: I think she is confused. She is surprised how she is even able to coexist with another female and not be competitive with her. Natalia has given her a sense of home and "being" that she has never felt before. I think she is just feeling differently than she has ever experienced. After the "My Two Mommies" essay came out and her daughter opened up that perspective to her, she started to look at things a little differently.

Are both women in a state of denial?
Crystal: I think Olivia is sensing she wants to say something. She just doesn't know what to say and she does not want to let this person go, because she is sensing she is more than just a friend. Beyond that, I think she is terrified.
Jessica: Natalia has been in visible denial. I think she did acknowledge to herself that is she was OK with letting things lie for a while. Then she could cling onto the happiness she had with Olivia without complicating it.

My worst fear is that Nat will be pregnant from the one night with Frank. Though I think another child wouldn't hurt Nat, Liv and Emma and Rafe it would create too many complications. I don't have enough characters here to cite all that occur to me.

I love this interview!!! Thank you thank you. Both of these actresses are terrific and I've never seen such care and tenderness put into a storyline. This can happen to "straight" women. I've been sharing my life for 9 years with a "straight" woman who actually left me 20 something years ago to marry a man that she didn't love--just to run away from her feelings. But love wins out--which is my love story, and which is why I love watching this story. The feelings are universal--they are not tied to sexuality. Bravo to Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia. More on them soon in the Advocate please!

I read about "Otalia" and had to do some research, especially when I saw that it was Crystal Chappell! I had the biggest crush on her as Carly Manning on DOOL. I have never watched GL, but I did some you tubing and now I am hooked! They are the hottest thing since Bette and Tina! It is a shame that CBS canceled the show, but I think this may help give them some free reign! We have until September, so I hope the writers go all out! BRAVO!

I'm a late comer...however, I'm completely jazzed, and quickly becoming obsessed with this couple! I've been sooooooo put out at ABC and their BS lately with both the firing of Brooke Smith on Grey's Anatomy, and the messed up story line on All My Children between Bianca and Reese! It is sooooooooo refreshing to be able to turn to CBS not ABC and see a lovely, wonderful, newly budding romance between two very beautiful women who are have just enough androgony to make the realationship feel really authentic in ways that other shows have not achieved! Kudo's to you CBS and The Guiding Light for making it happen! I am and will definately be watching! Otalia is my new obsession!!!

Bravo to Crystal, Jessica and the GL writing team. I don't remember the last time i got so invested in any television show. I had given up on soaps long ago, but I've always been a Crystal Chappell fan. I watched her years ago on Days of Our Lives and then gave daytimes drama another try years ago when I heard she was on GL. Frankly I could watch Crystal sit and read the newspaper for the whole episode and it would be more interesting than most of what is on television these days! She and Jessica have really done amazing work with this storyline. I hope the show does not let the fans down. Ok, I'm all about the slow burn, but let's get these two together already! ha. It's been a year in the making for crying out loud. No mater what, I am hooked. Thank you to the Advocate for a great interview with these talented women.

Bravo to GL's writers and their PTB for letting this story take its time. It would have been so easy to go for the big ratings-grabbing lesbian power moves. Instead, the actresses have been allowed to strut their stuff... and they've both done that in spades. I think what it comes down to for me is the writing and the acting. Beautiful writing matched only by masterful performances. I've lost count of how many scenes Chappell and Leccia have made me laugh out loud, or cry and more important - watch and wait for what will happen next... how many shows can you say that about these days?

I had never watched GL a day in my life but heard about this great new love story on afterellen and decided to give it a try. Otalia has been on the top of my tivo list every since. This is a first rate love story the slow burn it such a nice change. But every candle burns out sometimes GL come on already don't bring us this far to let Nat say yes to Frank. Or worse wake up to discover she's pregnant from their one night stand. I would feel so cheated.

I have become such an Otalia addict! These two have amazing chemistry and I've enjoyed the storyline immensely. Such a nice slow burning love story and it's all thanks to the amazing actresses. I can't wait to see more and I hope that Guiding Light keeps these two together for a while.
