All Things 'Nuke'

As the World Turns finally gives gay fans what they want -- Luke and Noah, together at last.

 Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann

As daytime television’s only gay male couple, Luke and Noah of As the World Turns, Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann have garnered much media attention for their portrayal of two young gays in love. Having just received another GLAAD Media Award nomination for best daytime drama series, 2009 looks to be another banner year for the show, and the duo.

Just a few weeks ago, gay fans got what they've been waiting more than a year for -- on the January 12 episode, Luke and Noah (better known to ATWT fans as "Nuke") finally had sex for the first time. The big day was met with controversy all over the Internet -- from soap pundits to mainstream journalists, many questioned the lack of promotion for the long-awaited moment from the powers-that-be at ATWT and Procter & Gamble (the show’s sponsor). Still, when the time finally came, Nuke fans were thrilled.

The couple made history back in August 2007 with the first on-screen kiss between two gay characters on a daytime soap. Subsequently, footage of the kiss logged over 2 million hits on YouTube and became one of the site's most viewed clips. But fans eager to see more became baffled and outraged as the characters' relationship seemed to stall -- limited airtime for several months led to fear of a gay kissing ban levied by the network and P&G. Following viewer backlash, Nuke at last kissed again in April 2008 -- and the rest, as they say, is history.

Advocate.com caught up with Hansis and Silbermann to discuss all things Nuke.

Advocate.com:Now that it's finally aired, howdo you think Nuke's first sex scene played out?
Hansis: I think it was a natural progression for the characters at this point to sleep together. I think it’s a good thing that they did. The time was right. It is important to show that they take it seriously. I am glad the fans are so happy because that is the most important thing.
Silbermann: I really liked the way the show handled it by not really having it with bells and whistles and fanfare…
Hansis: Also, it was exciting for the fans not to have any “spoilers” on it, because I know there was a big fan group waiting for this moment. In this day and age, to keep that a secret is pretty cool. I think the fans enjoyed being surprised and shocked.

Their passion seemed to ignite out of an impassioned argument, as they had been broken up for some time.
Silbermann: They weren’t really mad at each other. They really wanted to be together. So I think it was one of those heartfelt moments of what they were trying to say, and the action came out of it.

It’s important that gay romance receives fair cultural representation on television. Do you feel a responsibility in portraying these roles?
Silbermann: The most important thing is that it’s a story for people who felt unrepresented on our show, or any show.
Hansis: One of the most important things in the daytime medium, in portraying a couple long-term, is to give a voice to people who had not had a voice. Also, to show people who are not gay or who don’t have a personal connection to the story. They can form an empathetic connection to these characters. It helps people in that way.

Thanks for the terrific article featuring Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann. Awesome actors. Great Q & A. I hope fans continue to watch and support the show ... the ratings are low and I understand that P&G's Guiding Light will likely be cancelled this year, making ATWT one of the lowest rated soaps on the seven or so remaining programs. Soap producers must thing outside the box to build a new foundation for the genre or it will die. You can't measure YouTube views or DVR records. The NUKE storyline has a tremendous following, doing okay in Columbus, Ohio, but we're not watching when it counts by Nielsen measures. it could truly have a life as internet programming. I guess we simply voice our support to the network and P&G Television. Thanks again for a great article.

I read a few weeks ago about these two characters. I had only seen ABC soaps in the past. I caught all the clips on YouTube from the beginning of their relationship to the present, all in about one week! Thank God for YouTube! Anyway, these two actors, Van and Jake, portray Luke and Noah so realistically. They have such amazing chemistry together it doesn't even look like they're acting! I look forward to stealing some time every day to check out the latest clips on them. They are amazing and doing a wonderful job! I hope they keep Nuke on forever! (But happy)

That's a really great interview and I hope to read more of Van & Jake's interesting insights. These two actors give so much to the portraying of their characters that I'd like to see TPTB give them and the audience more interesting situations to play on the show. And I really want to see Luke & Noah living a realistic couple life and not just spending their time talking about it...

Great interview! Thanks! I only wish the print edition would spend a bit more time on Luke and Noah (and Van and Jake), too. It's not like the list of gay news in mainstream pop culture is so overwhelming that there just isn't room. Glad to see this here, though, and great work by Michael, Van and Jake!

In regards to the interview: EPIC. I'm in love with these two men and I seriously believe that I wouldn't be as invested in their characters if anybody else had been playing them. Van and Jake are just made of WIN.

Dingo: Actually, and this is if I'm reading and interpreting this correctly, these two characters didn't just "hop in to bed together". They have been together nearly a year and a half in a SEXLESS relationship. They have remained celibate until Jan. 12th where they finally consummated their relationship. This fight they were having was based on a lot of recent bad actions on both characters part and that fight sprung from built up tension/passion. Though TPTB having always handled the Nuke relationship realistically (read: a SEXLESS RELATIONSHIP FOR NEARLY A YEAR AND A HALF...among other things) they have done good job in general of establishing their relationship emotionally before they got to the physical aspect of it. There's a lot of background to this story in regards to gay culture and gay people (things like the gay pride episode and there being 4 other characters that have been introduced as gay) but you'd have to watch and see! :)

This was a very insightful and entertaining interview. Not only does there real life chemistry come across in print, they answer some questions that have been on my mind. Jake and Van do an awesome job portraying Luke and Noah, even if the storyline isn't always what the audience wants. Their interviews are always fun to seen and read. Hope that they do more in the future. Luke and Noah Forever!!!!!!!

I'd like to start by saying I haven't watched the show and know nothing about it. However, whenever I do hear about it, all I hear about are these 2 gay characters. How many of us live in a vacuum like that? Where we only know ONE other gay person, and it's someone we've been fighting with, and then hop into bed together? Is this a typical gay relationship? Is it being played like reality would play? It seems to me this is just another exploitation - "Let's have two gay guys plopped down in Heterosexualville, with NO other gay people, NO other gay culture, as if they had just sprouted out of the ether. BOO!" Of course, I could be wrong and I'll be happy to be put in my place if I am.

I simply love the duo of Luke and Noah. Jake Silbermann and Van Hansis are simply super as this couple. I know in soapland couples break up all the time but I simply can't see this couple ever being apart. At least that's what I hope. Luke and Noah together forever.
