New Place, New Gay

A far cry from the neutered gay guy of this first Melrose Place, the remake's Victor Webster plays a sports-loving, cigar-smoking, horny man's man who happens to like other dudes.

Matt Fielding, the token gay on the original Melrose Place, was something of a pyrrhic victory for LGBT viewers. Finally, TV had a series regular who was out and proud and managed to go seven seasons without killing anyone or turning straight. But he was about as exciting as warm milk -- and half as sexy.

For the revamped Melrose, producers decided they wanted a gay character with a little bite. Enter Caleb Brewer, a scotch-swilling, cigar-chomping man’s man who just happens to dig other dudes. Advocate.com sat down with Victor Webster, a former Playgirl model and star of the cult TV series Mutant X, about visiting the Place the second time around and whether gays in soaps are here to stay.

Advocate.com: What can you tell us about Caleb?
Victor Webster: He’s a publicist at the firm Ella, one of the housemates, works at. I think he first appears in the second episode. Caleb is Ella’s new boss and he creates a certain amount of havoc in her life. I’m on her all the time, but I want the best from her. Ella is very tough too, a ballsy go-getter. So there’s a certain amount of tension but also some good chemistry.

Is Caleb a series regular?
Well, I was brought on for a few episodes, but the reaction has been really positive, so there’s a good chance the character will be expanded.

Will he be interacting with other characters or moving into the apartment building?

[Laughs] Ah, they’d chomp my balls off if I told you that.

How much are you like Caleb?

I’m a lot like him. I work hard and love playing sports. I think I challenge others and expect a lot from them. I think he’s a little harsher, though.

Matt Fielding was much more sexy than warm milk! He was an activist, and activism is sexy.

This guy is really cute and I don't care if he is gay or straight, white or black, top or bottom, barebottom or bardback, endowed or not endowed or whatever. When you are cute, nothing else matters. All gay guys know that. It is just the straight guys that don't appreciate a really cute guy. The straight guys don't know what they are missing. They should join the club and have some "real" fun and s--.

i am sick to death of reading how heterosexual all these 'gay-for-pay' actors are. if an actor or anyone else won't appear for an interview which doesn't include his/her straightness, get someone else. why give them publicity? has this publication become the straight apologist of the gay press?

Yesterday, The Advocate was lampooned by numerous readers for its false story about a "big win" for the animal rights group Peta after it was thrown off CNN. These comments, critical of The Advocate, have all vanished, as did the whole comments section under that article. So I will write my comments here. I am a drag queen who has always been attacked because of how I dress. It is absurd for anyone who supports gay rights to support a group who attacks other people because of what they choose to wear. Now they-the clothing Fascists- are even going after people who wear wool. This horrible group has even staged a protest against a gay man with AIDS who got a life saving operation involving an animal part. I am not so riddled with self hate that I thiink human life is less important than rats or pigs. As for Peta spokesperson Pam Anderson, we see she is, obviously, a synthetic fan. That does not give this bimbo the right to decide my eating or wearing choices.
