Brent Corrigan Bags It Up

BRENT CORRIGAN SCREENGRAB X390

Porn star Brent Corrigan has partnered with Washington D.C.–based STD prevention group DC Fuk !t for a series of instructional videos on proper condom use and sexual health.

The program launched last year after a study revealed the nation’s capital has the highest percentage of HIV-positive residents in the country. It promotes safe sex and condom use through the distribution of safe sex kits promoted by a series of provocative, often sexually graphic ads and videos.

Cofounder Terry Gerace, M.D. says he recruited Corrigan for the campaign because of what he’s learned since starring in a series of bareback films at the beginning of his career while he was still underage. (Watch Corrigan's video here: WARNING: Contains sexually explicit content; NSFW)

“He has long since become an advocate for safer sex and has very publicly apologized for his past appearances in films depicting unsafe sexual practices,” Gerace says.

Garace talked to The Advocate about Corrigan’s video shoot, why he thinks the young porn star has more than redeemed himself for his bareback films, and how a recent scandal involving Yale University ended up playing a role in Corrigan’s campaign.

The Advocate: Why did you approach Brent Corrigan, who is known for shooting a number of bareback porn videos early in his career, to come full circle and do this PSA for proper condom use?
Terry Gerace, M.D.: It wasn’t so much about him having done bareback porn, it was that he’s made this change from doing it to not doing it. He hasn’t done those sorts of films for at least four years. He’s stayed in the industry, and now only does safer sex porns. It was really about it being someone who learned from their behavior and made a change, which I think represents most young people. They’ll start out doing something high-risk, and if they’re lucky, they’ll survive it and make a change. That’s what he did, so I think in a lot of ways, he represents your average person.

So much has gone back and forth about Corrigan — some think he was very aware of what he was doing in his early films, and others think he was a young kid taken advantage of by porn producers. Working with him on this campaign, what was your sense?
Oh, I would say that he was taken advantage of pretty clearly. No 17-year-old knows what they’re doing (laughs). He knew what he was doing as well as any 17-year-old brain knows what it’s doing. He definitely was taken advantage of, I don’t have any question about that… which is why he’s grown considerably. He’s an amazingly mature individual for someone who’s been through what he’s been through.

Dean Defense's post is wrong: FUK!T HIV prevention ads (not "AIDS ads") promote more than just condom use. In fact, this particular campaign takes a very comprehensive approach to prevention. If you bother to look at the website (www.dcfukit.org), you'll see that FUK!T makes a huge effort to address the spectrum bio/psycho/social issues that play into why and how gay men put themselves at risk for infection. Also, the point of this ad is to eroticize condom use and ensure gay men are using them properly, thus reducing the chance they will break/fail. Although testing is a critical component of our fight against HIV, you are myopic to imply that testing alone should suffice or would eclipse the need for condoms. Insidiously, newly positive individuals have highest viral loads just prior to seroconversion, meaning they're most infectious before HIV screening tests show they're pos. Finally, racist? Please! The site is so diverse and Brent just happens to be white. U must be kidding

i have a problem with these AIDS ads because it always promotes just condom usage in sex, but never long term relationships, monogamy, or non-judgmental behavior to people living with HIV and other STD's. Also even with safer sex, condoms breaks, and therefore testing should be paramount. Furthermore, not to sound racist, but how come this act of forgiveness and compassion is shown to Brent Corrigan(a cute guy, by the way) but not to the Cocodorm boys when they were thrown to the media hounds like doggy treats for allegedly spreading HIV to so called sex customers. Not to sound racist or harsh, but is it really the philosophy of "better late, then never" or better "white" then never. dean defense

As a healthcare professional, I have seen first-hand the effect of HIV infection. As devastating as this illness is, it is made even more tragic by the knowledge that so many cases could have been prevented by the principles shown in this video. If just 1 person benefits from this production, then it's more than worth it. As for Brent, he has given his time and his name to this worthwhile effort, most liking knowing his past would yet again be debated. Ironically, his past is exactly what most qualifies him to speak to this topic, from the "live and learn" perspective. I admire and respect the man for putting himself out there and opening himself up to sometimes hostile comments, all on the chance that somebody, somewhere learns from this PSA and comes away safer and smarter than he was. Thank you to both Dr. Gerace and Brent Corrigan for recognizing the need for this type of educational film, and stepping up to effectively meet that need.

I still cannot understand why so many people is too ready to condemn Brent for his poor choices when he was underage. I think that what he's doing now to raise awareness on safer sex and his position on bareback porn shows that he learnt from his errors. Moreover, I think that using someone who made some wrong decisions and then came to understand it and change his behavior for this campaign is possibly setting a better example than using someone else who didn't

Teenagers do stupid things. I'd say it's natural. Most of them realize, sooner or later, how stupid and, very often, misguided they were. Some of them try to make up for it. I reckon Mr Corrigan is an excellent example of a person learning from his mistakes. I just wish that the video actually reached the intended demography.

I think bareback sex is OK for a lifelong relationship, but the more important thing is to having sex safety.Brent did be a bad example in his early time,it not means that he can't do the right thing.Contrarily, that's why i think he is the suitbale person. What he went through is the best example.Resdressing and amending make it more powerful to convince people.
