Catholic Church in San Francisco Vandalized Over Prop. 8

A Catholic church in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood was vandalized with anti-Proposition 8 graffiti Sunday morning, even though the church is largely pro-gay. The Most Holy Redeemer church was defaced with black swastikas and impassioned messages, including one directed at San Francisco archbishop George Niederauer, who prominently supported Prop. 8, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The archbishop's last name was scrawled along the side of the church with the question "Where is the love?" the paper reports. But Niederauer aside, the Most Holy Redeemer is well known as a gay-friendly church, having participated in the city's gay pride parade in years past, according to the Chronicle. Church officials have said that most of its parishioners opposed Prop. 8, which outlawed same-sex marriage in California via a constitutional amendment.

The paper reports that most of the graffiti was washed off on Monday and that the affected areas will be painted over Tuesday. Local police are investigating the incident as a hate crime, but no suspects have been identified. (Advocate.com)

Painting all religions, denominations, and congregations with the same brush is a huge mistake. Referring to faith as a "cancer" is deeply offensive to all of us who take our faith seriously, whether gay or straight. Just because the elders and hierarchy of the Mormon church fought so hard against Prop 8 does NOT mean all Mormons are so closed-minded; just because the Catholic church hierarchy is staunchly anti-gay does not mean all Catholics are our enemies; just because fundamentalist Protestant conservatives are so publicly homophobic doesn't mean all people of faith are against the GLBT community. Come on, folks - we are as diverse a community as any other; let's direct our anger and frustration into something more productive than trashing religion.

As long as there are religious fundamentalists in this world, our life will be a living hell. It doesn't matter if it the christian, jewish, muslin or buddist faith, religion is based on ignorance, hate and selfishness. But religious liberals are even worse than radicals, because they are the traitors who attract people to this cancer known as faith; they are the entrance to this evil world of tribal mysticism. It was not religion that created hate and prejudice, but it supports, reinforces, blesses the most hideous feelings a human being could develop.

Let's be honest, people. Defacing private property is NEVER proper; I don't care whether the church is Catholic, Mormon, or whatever. Anyone encouraging such acts is an aider and abetter of criminal activity. What we gays want is "ordered liberty"; and people who engage in vandalism or malicious mischief do NOT further our cause. We must follow the law if we want to have a victory of which we can justly be proud. I very deeply resent having to donate more money to aid various organizations who desire to further gay rights through the courts and legislatures; but those are the ways to produce change. For all one knows, these defacements of church property could be the work of our opponents who are vicious enough to do such things. After all, advertisements asserting that churches will be forced to perform gay weddings or that public school teachers will be forced to teach about gay sex would stoop to any tactic to make their case.

Jason, You're completely wrong there! I happen to go to a Baptist church in the south and it's an extremely forward thinking church, with a quickly expanding gay membership. We've recently separated from that wacky Southern Baptist Convention as well. But we're still a Baptist Church, just not the type you'd expect! My church has always been ahead of it's time, including when women weren't allowed to preach, etc... Hating Christians (and I'm not saying you are, just a statement in general) just because they're Christians is never the right thing to do. I'M Christian, and so very often I find myself saying "Those stupid Christians!" then I have to take a step back, and realize that duh, I'm one of them. Only, not of the insane (read: conservative, religious right) type. I say, GO gay-friendly Catholic church! It's churches like this that turn the tide, no matter how long it takes.

A gay-friendly Catholic church is not a REAL Catholic church... This congregation would be considered wolves in sheep's clothing. Either that or demonstrating confusion while betraying the Vatican.
