Gay Man to Be Tapped As Deputy Director of Obama's Public Liaison Office

Advocate.com has confirmed that Brian Bond, a 25-year political veteran, will be named by President-elect Barack Obama as deputy director of the Office of Public Liaison.

A transition team aide has told The Advocate that President-elect Barack Obama will name Brian Bond deputy director of the White House Office of Public Liaison.

Bond, a political veteran who has headed the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund and held several positions at the Democratic National Committee, will have managerial and strategic responsibilities for the entire Public Liaison office as well as function as the point person on LGBT issues. The liaison office is tasked with communicating and promoting presidential policies to individual constituency groups and serving as a sounding board for the president on policies that affect certain interest groups.

Several LGBT insiders on Capitol Hill said Bond, who served as director of constituencies for the president-elect during his campaign, was a great fit for the position. “He’s a very skillful and experienced political strategist,” said Bob Witeck, CEO of the D.C.-based Witeck-Combs Communications, who has known Bond for 15 years. “His knowledge of our community and the competence he has in working with both leaders and activists is immense.”

Bond served as executive director of the Victory Fund, a national bipartisan group that works to elect openly gay people to public office, from 1997 to 2003. Jeff Trammell, a Democratic strategist and senior adviser to Vice President Al Gore during his presidential bid, cochaired the organization in the late 1990s and was instrumental in hiring Bond for the position.

“We had to rebuild the Victory Fund,” Trammell recalled, noting that the organization was nearly bankrupt at that point. “We were very impressed with both his passion for our issues and his savvy, his political smarts.” Trammell called Bond’s tenure a “turning point moment” for the organization and said he laid the foundation for the current work being done there. “He basically built that place -- he took us from the ground floor up a number of levels so that we could build that skyscraper.”

Witeck said Bond’s years at the Victory Fund were a great training ground for the responsibilities he will assume. “Its mission is really to make our elected and appointed officials better policy people,” he explained. “So that connection -- from his role at the Victory Fund into the realm of the Democratic Party and ultimately the White House -- is to translate those skills into getting and keeping openly LGBT political leaders and policy makers in positions where they can do the most good.”

Im confused. The article says that the "liaison office is tasked with communicating and promoting presidential policies to individual constituency groups and serving as a sounding board for the president on policies that affect certain interest groups" I thought that a Liaison was supposed to also hear the peoples concerns and communicate those to the office of the Prez. How does "promoting presidential policies to individual constituency groups" really differ from just being an extra source of targeted propaganda from the office? isnt a liaison supposed to be facilitating two way communication or something?

I think these are good news! The comments i read about it are really sad. Everybody wants everything right away and even if there's no doubt that we have the same right as heterosexuals i think we should be happy with these small steps. This is the biggest LGBT problem, people got so sick of homophobia that they see it where it doesn't exist! If even people from the community continue about us as minor or weak, things will never change! Thumbs up for Obama! With time he will make the change, i'm sure!

A token appointment for a minor position. Obama and the Democrats truly are pathetic and insulting to the gay community.

So this is what Obama does to try and cover up the fact that he supports homophobes like Rick Warren and doesnt think the LGBTQ community deserves the legal right to marry...he appoints an openly gay man to a minor position. Pathetic!!

As a resident of red (or perhaps Florida is now purple at best) state America, I am pleased to see that Bond comes from Missouri. He may realize that the understandable focus on "marriage" by activists in blue states like CA, NY, and MA has come at a great cost to those of us in redder states given the publicity for the hallowed word marriage. Florida just voted for Obama but passed by 60% an antimarriage amendment that is far more draconian than California's Prop 8. It probably makes even partnership rights illegal. Many of my friends and I want equal rights--economic in particular-- for ourselves and our partners, with or without the word marriage. Florida and Texas are two of the four most populous states in the country, yet one still can be fired simply for being gay and "hate" crimes against gays are not recognized.Perhaps Bauer can begin by persuading Obama to champion passage of federal ENDA and hate crimes legislation now.

Wow, the Obama admin is really going to bat for us with this appointment...guess this is suppose to make us feel better for not including any of our brothers and sisters in his cabinet...talk about throwing us scraps to shut us up!!

If Bond is such a skilled advisor, why didn't he mention to Obama that maybe Rick Warren was not the best choice to kick off Obama's presidency? I hope when he goes to the inauguration Bond will join others in singing "We Shall Overcome" to drown out the voice of the anti-gay, any-feminist, anti-science Warren.
