Colombia Rules Gay Couples Must Be Granted Same Rights as Straight

In a historic decision handed down Wednesday, Colombia's Constitutional Court ruled same-sex couples must be granted the same rights as heterosexuals in common-law marriages.

The court's decision means Colombia's gay couples will be awarded dozens of rights that straight, unmarried couples have enjoyed for years and follows other recent rulings that have won the nation's same-sex couples inheritance, pension, health, and social security rights.

The Colombian LGBT rights group Colombia Diversa, human rights group Dejusticia, and the Group for Public Interest Rights from the University of the Andes were responsible for the successful suit, filed last April.

Uruguay is the only other Latin American country to recognize same-sex unions. (Neal Broverman, Advocate.com)

America in the following: 1) Colombia 2)Uruguay 3)Ecuador 4) Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) 5) Buenos Aires (Argentina) 6) Rio Negro (Brazil)

I am very proud to call myself Colombian now that I hear about this. I think I moved here to the US mostly because of my sexual orientation and the fact that I felt like Colombian society would be to oppressing... now, here in the U.S is a different story, perhaps it needs to see other countries accepting gay rights before they do.

I'm from Colombia. I'm am not a homosexual, or have family who is, or friends, or anything. I think that this is a historical move from a region that has been influenced so deeply by the Catholic Church. This shows a humanistic approach to society. We should have been able to overcome this simple social dilemma a long time ago. I am proud that Colombia has risen above the rest, above the Church and into whats RIGHT and whats Human. This is the future and i'm proud to be on the edge.

Sam, if the end is coming, shouldn't you be excited? Assuming you know where you are going? Shouldn't you be "wanting" that?? Unless, perhaps, you have some doubt about where your final destination will be...

Sam - Dude, are you up for Christian of the Year or something? Do you think Jesus will like you better if you continue to spread the hate? Good luck on the award, Sam. You have LOTS and LOTS of stiff competition (pun intended).

Im a proud colombian, and live in Barranquilla, Im also happy for this news that broke only last thursday. and from my point of view is was totally unexpected, and it happened without so much fanfare than in other countries, how weird... But anyway, I m realistic, there's a long, long way to pave in order to educate a big chunk of people who are narrow-minded, and then are the christian conservatives too, given the nature of my country I think there will be a lot of hurdles, misssteps, even dead people before we actually have the total recognition we deserve as citizens. Let's wait and see how it goes, but Im happy! :)
