Tennessee Bill Would Bar Unmarried Couples From Adopting

A new bill has been introduced in the Tennessee general assembly that would prevent any unmarried couple -- gay or straight -- from adopting children in the state.

"I think if you poll a majority of Tennesseans and ask them, they can see that two people who've not objectively, publicly stated a commitment to their relationship put a child at risk of being in an unstable home," said David Fowler, executive director of the conservative Family Action Council of Tennessee.

"This isn't about quality of care. This isn't about the commitment of the parents. This is about a very narrow agenda," Dr. Marisa Richmond, president of the Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition, told the Chattonooga Times Free Press .

Richmond cited the $6 million fiscal note attached to last year's version of the proposed law, which she said was based on an estimated $20,000 cost for each of the roughly 300 children who would be kept in state custody and denied a home because of the restriction.

"We were hoping that, with the budget crisis, they wouldn't reintroduce this bill," she said.

The senate bill, which is sponsored by Republican senator Paul Stanley of Memphis, has been referred to the Senate judiciary committee. (Rhiza Dizon, Advocate.com)

Wow. Being a liberally-minded gay man from the South, I must say to View From The Left, nothing like being so narrow-minded and generalizing an entire region of the country. It would be like saying everyone from Providence is a hateful, closed-minded hypocrite. But we all know that is not the case. The real tragedy with this bill is there are hundreds of children needing homes that will be denied those homes because of misinformation being dispersed by those who lack the understanding to think outside of the box. Its about education people. Not hatred. Not bigotry from either side. In order to get tolerance, we have to give it. Acknowledge people where they are and then show them a better alternative.

Mark Van Kekerix - you're deluding yourself, just like the Log Cabin Republiturds who think they're "working from within to promote change". THERE HAS BEEN NO CHANGE. I have friends who live in both Lincoln and Omaha, and they say the gay bashing, the discrimination, the prejudice - the HATE is just as much as it ever was before. If your gay community is "thriving", it's doing so in the closet.

Hey, "View from the Left" - tone it down! Lumping all southerners together as "bigots and scum" is pretty narrow-minded on your part. I happen to live in Nebraska, which, while certainly not "down South" is definitely one of the most socially and politically conservative parts of the country. Despite that, I wouldn't leave it - this is my home. Even in the middle of this conservative homophobic state I've found a thriving GLBT community and an extended network of supportive friends. The answer here is not to tell me (or anyone else) to move away from my community. The right answer here is to help me change my community for the better.

It boggles the mind that at the same time that families are losing their incomes and their homes and their hope, there's still "leaders" who are willing to actively seek to keep kids from being adopted and to foist millions upon millions of additional costs on the taxpayers like this. And even more amazing is that it hasn't led to a revolution yet among the people who will have to both shoulder the financial burden as well as watch the children going un-adopted due to antiquated notions of morality.

bigots and scum. Why does anyone live down South with those fools? They were wrong on race issues, wrong on gender issues, wrong on sexual-orientation issues. I mean, wake up America, who do you think gave us George W. Bush and look at how ALL of his policies have caused chaos, why should this one be any different? Southern leaders ARE THE WRONG LEADERS FOR THIS COUNTRY! Wrong in the time of Lincoln, wrong in the time of Hoover, wrong in the time of Bush and wrong with the current leadership they have. THESE PEOPLE ARE MORONS! bigots and scum

What a superbly sneaky way to keep same-sex marriage out of Tennessee without allowing the issue to surface -- only allow couples who are married to adopt, then refuse marriage to committed same-sex couples. Clever, you devilish republicans, clever, even though it will cost Tennessee taxpayers a bundle, even though it will deny loving homes to children. What great humanitarians you are! (In case you lack a sense of humor, the last sentence is highly sarcastic.)
