Wash. GOP Senator: Gay Is 'Genetic'

Embattled GOP chairman Michael Steele can find some support within his own party for his statement that homosexuality is not a choice . Washington state senator Dale Brandland, a Republican from Whatcom County, says his belief that people are born gay motivated him to vote in favor of expanded domestic-partnership rights for same-sex couples on Tuesday.

"I guess from my perspective, I've come to the conclusion that people are born gay," Brandland told the Bellingham Herald. "I don't think this is something that they just pick up along the way."

"Once I came up with that kind of conclusion," he said, "it wasn't difficult for me to understand that gay people are going to develop feelings for people of the same sex and will want to get into meaningful relationships."

Brandland, a former sheriff for Whatcom, a northern county adjacent to British Columbia, has previously voted in favor of gay rights. He supported the original 2007 legislation to create a domestic-partnership registry in the state, and he voted for the first expansion of the rights in 2008.

The statewide Faith and Freedom Network of conservatives chided Brandland for his vote in support of expanded domestic-partnership rights, calling him "a gay activist's fantasy."

Ahhhh the gay rules. It's not enough that you accept them. You have to follow a list of rules. "You're born gay, but you can change your gender by sheer will" Please, being gay is NOT genetic. They're gay because that's their mothers made them that way. Google Camille Paglia and Valley of the dolls. She'll explain it to you.

It's funny how everyone needs to know if being Gay is a choice or if we're born this way. No matter how you explain to a non-Gay person how you knew you we're born Gay -THEY JUST NEVER UNDERSTAND. My best argument for this is WE ARE GOD'S NATUAL BIRTH CONTROL (THAT'S WHY THE CHURCH HATES US SO MUCH). Not that we aren't good Parent's because I believe we are some of the best Parents on the Planet. It's just if the Gay genes are in over 1500 noted different animals there has to be a natual reason (LIKE MAYBE BEING BORN GAY). It's sad to know the only way we will ever be truely accepted is if it can be proved we are born this way. I don't know about all of you but I am glad I was born GAY, THANK GOD. Also for the record my favorite sport is Pool and we have no Gay leagues in Arizona so I play as a open Gay man in the Straight leagues and I have see first hand how to changes minds one person at a time. It a great feeling. Love to you all and have a Gay Day.

Having come out as a lesbian more than 35 years ago at age 21, I have witnessed tremendous progress in the acceptance of people of my ilk. I came to the conclusion years ago that the liberation of me, my brothers and sisters will take a long time and probably will only happen one person at a time. Thank goodness that Mr. Brandland is the latest to bite the dust! If you have listened to some teenagers of late, many of that age group seem to have been born without homophobic tendencies at all. I emphasize "some." I suspect others in my mother's age group will take their homophobia to the grave with them. I think we all have a responsibility to be as good of a role model as possible for our neighboring straights to see what an ethical gay or lesbian acts like. Thus, social movement creeps along. I encourage you to never stop loving. Love totally destroys fear--including homophobia. Bazz H. P.S. My father was "bisexual!"

While I'm glad that Brandland voted for equality, I still have to ask, "does it really matter why we're LGBT?" It's not a moral issue: being a good person has nothing to do with being LGBT! I think it's interesting from a scientific (genetics, development, anthropology, etc.), but it is amoral (not immoral) and should not be the basis for legal distinctions.

For years I tortured myself with the question...Why am I gay? As I turn 70 I finally realize I am what my maker intended me to be. My father was bi-sexual and my brothers son was too. I am a Lesbian. My partner for 48 years found out she has a gay male from every Aunt on her mothers side. One of her Aunts has 2 gay sons. One has a Lesbian daugher. A nephew came out to us about 10 years ago. I cried over it for two weeks. I don't wish this on anyone in this rabied HOMOPHOBIC WORLD!! But it has made us protective of him. Thank you Mr. Steele and Mr. Brandland!! At last inlightenment!!

I think we should support Michael Steel and Dale Brandland for their courageous action by sending thank you letters/emails to them. Thank God, finally, their conscience is opened.

Thankyou for realizing I was born this way. I have a gay uncle and lesbian Aunt on both sides of my straight parents family. I can be put down in the Playboy mansion and nothing will happen. I attempted to be with women and it just confirmed it.

Thank You Dale Brandland! It's clearly genetic in my family. I have at least seven gay and lesbian cousins all on one side of my family.
