The New York state
assembly
passed
a bill on Tuesday to prohibit discrimination based on gender
identity and expression in employment, housing, public
accommodations, access to credit, and other key areas. The
Gender Expression Non-discrimination Act also would add gender
identity and expression as protected categories in the
state's human rights law.
GENDA passed the
Democrat-controlled assembly by a wide margin for the
second session in a row. This year, debate on the measure took
15 minutes, according to
Gay City News
.
The bill faces less
certain prospects in the senate, where Democrats hold a slim
32-30 majority. Last year, when the chamber was controlled by
Republicans, the bill died without being taken up.
A March 2008 poll by
Global Strategy showed that 78% of registered New York voters
favor passage of a bill to protect transgender
rights.
