Gay Kentucky Students: "You Can't Pee Here"

Fifteen students protested outside a Frankfort, Ky., high school on Friday after an official allegedly sent a notification to teachers advising them to bar gay students from leaving class to use the restroom.

The reported e-mail was sent by Franklin County High School assistant principal Karen Buzard after two female students were reportedly seen kissing in a bathroom, according to the Kentucky Equality Federation.

A statement on the school's website says that students have not been singled out, but the directive was "that certain students should not be allowed to leave the classroom during class because they had been in violation of school rules. All students have time between classes to use the facilities."

Protesters waved rainbow flags and signs that read, "Honk if you're gay" and "We have a right to pee," the State-Journal reports.

Wayne Dominick, communications coordinator for the school district, said administrators are figuring out how to address students' concerns.

Straight students break the rules in the restrooms all the time. What is the difference? This is America, we are supposed to be free and equal, and you are supposed to teach our children what it means to be free in America. This is not Iran, we should not be oppressing our children because they are gay. They should know that they are allowed to be gay in America, even if we personally do not agree with it. As a teacher or faculty member of a school in the United States, it is your responsibility to teach our children what they need to be a successful American citizen. Teaching them that something is wrong, when according to our constitutional rights it is perfectly acceptable, is irresponsible and only furthers their own agenda and does not put the best interests of the child first.

thats bullshit dude. i hav many gay friends n just bcuz theyre gey doesnt mean they cant use the bathroom. they probably werent even making out. i live in kentucky n i kno how those rednecks are. for christ sake, half of the police force in bullitt county are part of the KKK. so clearly sumone is homophobic n just wants to stir sum shit up. im sorry. but at my skool, kidds hav been caught having sex in the stairways. not only that, but in the bathroom too. so i mean, even straight people do it. u cant take it out on the gays bcuz they went to the restroom to do it. they knew if they tried to even HOLD HANDS in the hallway, they'd probably get hung or sumthn. i hate living in kentucky. they think the laws dont apply to them, n that they can say who goes where n when.

First off, Don't go directing anger at the teachers! They are the poor grunt workers trying to teach hormone-laden kids while under adminstrative- and state-mandated pressures. The homophobic based ban is stupid and the idiot that came up with that idea should have to mop the highschool for the rest of the school year! When I was in HS, a ninth-grade straight couple was caught in the missionary position on the steps during class time. I don't recall a ban on straight kids using that stairwell after that happened; oh well, I guess that "punishment" was overlooked.

I went to high school in Henry County and straight kids were engaged in oral sex in the classroom. Our school system banned bathroom passes during class. It is sad and a pathetic display of limited authority, but it is all these low level bullies have at their disposal to make themselves feel powerful. I support these kids. They also ban students from going as same sex couples to prom, even if there is no relationship implied.

Wouldn't it make a great deal of sense if they were to simply punish the girls in question for violating school regulations regarding public displays of affection? I mean, as students violating these rules. Because they're just students. Violating rules. If one black, hispanic, or asian couple did the same thing more or less, would they have barred all of the students in that particular minority from using the restroom? Unlikely. In all actuality, that would have caused even more of a fuss. This kind of thing makes me sick.

I guess what bothers me about all of this is that the vice principal actually thought this would fly with people. We had gay and lesbians in my high school and they would walk holding hands like male female couples and it was no big deal for anybody. I mean we have teachers across america having sex with students, they give students drug raise a kids grades for money, and teaching them how to make meth (California). Why dont she do something about the other stuff that goes on in the school. Sounds like she needs a shrink, Prozac, a lawyer, and a new job in that order.

I could not belive this when I heard about it. I was trying to figure out what principal it could have been, then I heard the name Karen Buzard. And I am not suprised one bit. I graduated from FCHS in 2001 and I believe that woman was probably the most disliked teacher at that school...this proves why. Banning someone from using the bathroom? Ridiculous.
