Action continues today
on the swiftly moving marriage-equality front, with votes
expected in Maine and Washington, D.C.
Following last
Thursday's passage of marriage-equality legislation in the
Maine senate, the house will take up the bill today (live
arguments can be heard
here
). Supporters are fairly confident of a
positive outcome
on the heels of the 21-14 senate vote, although Gov. John
Baldacci, a Democrat, has yet to say explicitly that he will
sign the legislation.
In Washington, D.C.,
the city council is considering a
proposal
to recognize same-sex marriages and civil unions performed
elsewhere. All but one of the council's 13 members gave their
initial approval to the amendment in April, just hours after
Vermont's legislature voted for marriage equality. The council
action presents unique potential to affect the
marriage-equality conversation in the U.S. Congress, which
holds sway over laws in the district.
