Marie Osmond Loves Her Gay Daughter

In an interview with Los Angeles radio station KOST 103.5, Marie Osmond confirmed rumors that her daughter Jessica is a lesbian and spoke about her views on marriage equality. Though the interviewer suggested the question might be "a sensitive topic" because of Osmond's Mormon faith, the entertainer didn't hold back.

"That's not a sensitive topic, I love my daughter," said Osmond with a laugh.

Last week, the U.K. publication The Sun suggested all may not be well between Osmond and her daughter. But Osmond went on to say that though the Mormon Church may not agree with homosexuality, she isn't imposing those beliefs on her children.

"You know, on those types of things I'm very supportive. When it comes to marriage, I think that civil rights need to be for all," Osmond said. "When you start mixing religion into that and beliefs, you know, I do believe in the Bible. My daughter understands my beliefs. And, you know, God said to be married and be productive with your children and, you know, replenish the earth or whatever. She understands those things. My daughter is sharp. And we have a great relationship and I think she would tell you that."

In the weeks following the passage of Prop. 8 in California, Marie Osmond and her brother Donny became easy targets for some gay activists as high-profile members of the Mormon Church, which was responsible for raising a substantial amount of money in passing the same-sex marriage ban, but the brother-sister act responded by appearing on posters condemning the church.

Actually, Marie is NOT against what the Mormon church believes. The church believes we should love everyone, and of course that includes your own children. A far as civil rights are concerned, gays already do have those rights. What the LDS Church is against is the state (government) deciding on what the definition of marriage is. Mormons believe marriage is a church institution, and believe in the separation of church and state. If a church decided it allowed gays to marry, the LDS church would have no quarrel. It does not want the government telling any church how it should define marriage. That said, good for Marie. A very few some in the church have given it a bad name by totally disowning their children when they have announced their homosexuality. I don't believe that is how Jesus would handle the situation.

(Cont by Jo-Anne) People come in all shades literally and I knew there was a reason I have always loved the Osmond family. They brought the church to my family. I just keep praying that some day one or more of the church leaders will receive the inspiration to know that families come in many ways, and that the church will change it's ways regarding Homosexuality. It may be a long shot, but I know I'll keep praying. I was at church when the ruling came down from the church that blacks could hold the priesthood. I was only 15 or 16, but I will never forget the shivers I got down my spine. It was truly an inspirational moment. I'm hoping the same will happen with this cause. Love & Peace to all, Jo-Anne

I was heartened to hear that Marie had a gay daughter. I am in the midst of trying to go back to church because I miss it so much. I am gay, and lost the love of my life 3 years ago. We had been together for 18 years. I am not interested in having a relationship at this point in my life as I am very ill. I know I will never give money to anything like prop 8. I'm so glad to hear that Donny & Marie both stood up for what is right and spoke up. People assume because you're Mormon that you are closed minded and don't have a heart. I have many friends who know about me and are encouraging me and not criticizing me for my past. Love & Peace to all, Jo-Anne

When Marie Osmond's daughter told her she was a lesbian, Marie said "I'm leaving it up to you oo oo; you decide what you're gonna do" Then she rang Donny who asked what Jessica's partner looked like. Marie said "She's a bit of a dog". Donny said "And they call it Puppy Love!" Ok you're right - maybe it's not so bloody funny after all. I've fancied Donny since I saw him on TV at school in Windsor singing Puppy Love. We turned down the brightness on the TV and could still see his teeth shining through! Donny - will you marry me?

Wow, well if you liked them or not, if you are over 38, then they were a part of your childhood. To see someone who is an icon and a Mormon say what she said gives me hope, and truthfully made me cry a little. Good luck to you Marie, you are a star, yet again

I just want to say its really brave of marie to step out and support her daughter. In LDS culture having a gay child is taboo and something to keep quiet about and be embarassed of, its pretty much one of the worst fates for your child. I have to say that I am lucky enough to have a supportive mom like Marie. Marie sets a good example for all mormon mothers of gay children.
