"Harvey Milk
Day" is one step closer to reality in California.
A state senate
committee gave the green light on Wednesday to designate May 22
as "Harvey Milk Day" in California; the bill now
heads to the full senate. According to the Associated Press,
the day would be a "day of special significance"
recognizing Milk's life and contributions to the state but
would not be a holiday, meaning there would be no closures and
the state wouldn't incur any costs.
The bill may have to
overcome a veto -- Republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
killed a nearly identical bill last year, saying it
should be up to each community to determine if it wanted to
honor Milk, the slain San Francisco city supervisor.
Oscar-winning
Milk

helped plead the case
for "Harvey Milk Day" to the California senate.
