Clinton Supports Gay Marriage

Former president Bill Clinton said in a conference for progressive students that he supports gay and lesbian couples' right to marry.

"Yeah," Clinton said when asked after a speech at the Campus Progress National Conference, according to The Nation . "I personally support people doing what they want to do. I think it's wrong for someone to stop someone else from doing that [same-sex marriage]."

In 1996, Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which banned recognition of same-sex marriages at the federal level and gave individual states the right to refuse recognition to such marriages even if performed legally in other states. He also approved the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" law, which barred openly gay personnel from serving in the military.

In a 2000 interview with The Advocate , Clinton said that "people who have a relationship ought to be able to call it whatever they want. And insofar as it's sanctified by a religious ceremony, that's up to the churches involved."

He added about the fight in Congress over DOMA, "I think what happened in the Congress was that a lot of people who didn't want to be antigay didn't feel that they should be saying that as a matter of law, without regard to what various churches or religions or others thought, that the United States policy was that all unions that call themselves marriages are, as a matter of law, marriages. I don't think we're there yet. But I think that what we ought to do is to get the legal rights straightened out and let time take its course, and we'll see what happens."

Maxim, you'll also not Clinton did not approve of gay marriage as President, and was behind the "don't ask don't tell" military guideline. Clinton's just angling a wedge between gay democrates and Obama for the benefit of his wife Hillary. If it becomes more valuable to Hillary to do a complete 180 by election time, you can bet good old Oval Office BJ Bill will!

Eduardo, you have to suffer an awful deep brainwashing indoctrination of gay theology to try to attempt to say God somehow supports gay rights. God does fully support gays in human rights or civil rights, but God does not support gay rights as in same sex marriage, etc., etc.! This is the crazed twisting of traditional morals and values, to the point gay agendaers rewrite history, theology, laws and attempt to oppress any and all who disagree, that is Exhibit A as to why the gay agenda must be stopped. It's nazi tactics for promoting an immoral sexuality as root cause, pure and simple! Civil and Human Rights are a Virtue, while gay rights is a Vice! The Vice cannot be made a Virtue!

The most embarrassing part of what's happening in this country about civil rights right now, specially since last elections, is that blacks, considered "second class citizens" not to long ago, are doing the same with LGTB people. What's wrong with them. Haven't they learn the lesson that MLK Jr. preached? What kind of God they think is just on their side and not an the side of all humans. And it is abusive and disgusting that they pick and choose what part of the bible, absolutely out of context, to use to excuse their behavior. Shame on all of them!

Canada's Constitutional Democracy works so much better than the United States Democratic Republic. This is evident in the progression of rights for sexual minorities, visible minorities, abortion, and womens rights in Canada. Our system does not leave every issue to the masses who are usually ignorant of the world and issues beyond their own white picket fences. Laws are sometimes struck down by the Supreme Court of Canada or laws are sent to the Supreme Court in advance to see whether or not they are constitutional. Marriage is legal in Canada however to protect Freedom of Religion churhes can opt out of performing wedding ceremonies and I agree with that logic. However the province of Saskatchewan is currently trying to amend the law to allow public servants to opt out of performing gay marriages. This will not fly. A publicly paid employee must abide by the law no matter what their personal beleifs. Bill Clinton says "well see what happens in time" WHAT? How much longer

And what took him so long? Joe Mustich, Justice of the Peace, Washington, Connecticut, USA. I'm busy this summer officiating for couples who are coming to CT to wed from around the country because they aren't allowed (?) to do so in their own home states just yet. It's time America. It's time Obama. End DOMA and DADT now.....

To Jeff, from Ft. Lauderdale: Please tell me that your client's story is not true. It sickens me to have read it. And, this happened in Ft. Lauderdale? I certainly would not have moved from my spot on the beach. And if the cops handcuffed me and took me away, then so be it. The city of Ft. Lauderdale would have had a huge lawsuit on their hands and tons of unwanted media attention.
