Gerard Butler: Not Gay, But Not Straight

Towleroad has stumbled upon a five-year-old interview with 300 star Gerard Butler in which he tells Movieline magazine, "I have been in relationships with women. And men. That doesn't make me gay. That doesn't make me straight."

Butler told the magazine, "I talk about my sexuality. But it's always glossed over. People seem to shy away from the issue. Whenever it is discussed, it's distended and exaggerated. Gerard Butler is gay. No I'm not. I don't know myself what I am so it can be bewildering to see that being plugged.

"It's hard enough to go through these things in my mind without being scrutinized about it so there are times when you want to close the door and say my sexuality is my own personal business."

The interview has resurfaced just as Butler embarks on a press tour to promote two new movies: The Ugly Truth , a romantic comedy with Katherine Heigl, and the action flick Gamer.

While promoting The Ugly Truth, Butler told the press that openly gay director Robert Luketic cast him because of a joke he'd told about a gay guy and a cucumber.

"A gay guy walks into a greengrocer and he says 'Can I have a cucumber please?'" Butler said, repeating the joke to a reporter. "And the greengrocer says, 'Eh, would you like that sliced?' [and the gay guys says] 'What do you think I am, a slot machine?' It's not very funny. It's just the way I said it."

Most young people agree that sexual orientation is nobody's business and, from what I read, the lines regarding sex between couples is becoming more blurred all the time. The bottom line is...STAY OUT OF OUR BEDROOMS and OUR SEX LIVES.

The news worthy part of this story is the fact that unlike many other actors in Hollywood, Gerard is being totally honest about his sexuality and letting the chips fall where they may. Whether he's gay, straight, bi or somewhere in between all those, he is himself. That's something everyone should applaud.

For one I think its great that this is out in the open. So many hide because they are afraid what it will mean for their career. I think he is one of the sexiest men alive. It's nice to know that someone you idolize is available romantically and not just a fantasy. We are becoming more excepted in this day and age and to think that you have to hide is a sad fact. So many are opressed whether it be by where we live, the way we were raised or your "friends". Don't keep it a secret. Let it out. Why suffer?

Gerard Butler I stand behind you because in this life gay or straight who knows who you are going to end up with a man or a woman. I have heard many stories of a gay man and women getting married so it is just the states and if you think about it everyone who is curious about sexuality and aren't comfortable with being adventourous well that is just their problem. Plus he is a handsome man and the one thing I like about him his personal life is his own and that is very man enough for him to say relationships with both men and women. I personally hope he finds happiness with whichever sex man or woman! Gerard Butler gets two thumbs up from me!

Ok why would most of us really care if Butler is gay or straight. I mean if he were gay do most guys think they would even stand a chance with him. If he is gay I'm sure he's already seeing somebody anyway so who cares who he sleeps with ... if it isn't you then don't worry about it. Yes he is damn hot .. but gay men need to accept the fact that gay celebs most likely already have somebody. Oh and no I would not kick Butler out of bed if I had the chance. Some of us gays do live in the real world.

Somedays I don't think I'm gay or straight either. Somedays I just am. If we don't think about sex for a while, are we still gay? If a tree falls in the woods or somesuch...
