Towleroad
has stumbled upon a five-year-old interview with
300
star Gerard Butler in which he tells
Movieline
magazine, "I have been in relationships with women. And
men. That doesn't make me gay. That doesn't make me
straight."
Butler told the
magazine, "I talk about my sexuality. But it's always
glossed over. People seem to shy away from the issue. Whenever
it is discussed, it's distended and exaggerated. Gerard
Butler is gay. No I'm not. I don't know myself what I am so it
can be bewildering to see that being plugged.
"It's hard
enough to go through these things in my mind without being
scrutinized about it so there are times when you want to close
the door and say my sexuality is my own personal
business."
The interview has
resurfaced just as Butler embarks on a press tour to promote
two new movies:
The Ugly Truth
, a romantic comedy with Katherine Heigl, and the action flick
Gamer.
While promoting
The Ugly Truth,
Butler told the press that openly gay director Robert Luketic
cast him because of a joke he'd told about a gay guy and a
cucumber.
"A gay guy walks
into a greengrocer and he says 'Can I have a cucumber
please?'" Butler said, repeating the joke to a reporter.
"And the greengrocer says, 'Eh, would you like that
sliced?' [and the gay guys says] 'What do you think I
am, a slot machine?' It's not very funny. It's just
the way I said it."
