Dems To Introduce DOMA Repeal in House

JERROLD NADLER X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

A group of Democrats in Congress, including New York representative Jerry Nadler, are reportedly preparing to introduce a repeal to the law that restricts the federal government from recognizing gay and lesbian marriages or partnerships legally recognized in certain states.

The group is gearing up to notify fellow congressmembers that the bill will introduced, while asking for their support, according to Politico.com.

While House speaker Nancy Pelosi has said she supports repealing the 13-year-old law, the House has a full slate of economic issues to deal with over the next session. President Barack Obama also campaigned on the message that he would approve of repealing DOMA. However, the Department of Justice, under Obama, has issued two briefs pertaining to the law over the summer, defending it in federal court cases.

Nobody, including Barney Frank thinks this has a chance in hell of happening. But Congress will be throwing us a few crumbs in the form of extending "benefits" to same sex partners. So how's that change workin' out for ya?

Bill Clinton, the President who supported the passage of DOMA and signed it into law, was a conservative Democrat. Clinton betrayed gay voters whose support he sought for election in 1992 and 1996. Clinton also approved NAFTA and the banking deregulation that destroyed our economy. By no means was Clinton a liberal or the darling of liberals as many conservatives like to pretend. Repealing DOMA will enhance states rights. The repeal will allow the federal government to recognize the marriages of gay couples in the six states that recognize marriage equality.

"The Truth" is quite right in noting that George Bush (i.e., W) was still in Texas when DOMA was signed into law, but s/he doesn't go far enough. It was the liberal's darling, Billy Boy Clinton, who signed the ACT into LAW.

Jeff W. --> DOMA is not an affront to States Rights, it's an affirmation of states rights. It lets each state do what her citizens want. It lets each state choose whether or not to recognize same-sex marriage. Maybe that's what you meant.

Wow it's been 13 years since George Bush signed DOMA into law? Time flies! But wait, I almost forgot that George Bush was still just hootin' and hollerin' in Texas when DOMA was signed into law.

The so-called Defense of Marriage Act is a national disgrace. It is the most brazen example of institutionalized homophobia and discrimination we have endured since Stonewall. It is also an affront to states' rights. The institution of civil marriage has ALWAYS been within the jurisdiction of the states. The federal government has no business telling states whom they can or cannot recognize as married. Furthermore, it's contrary to the Full Faith and Credit clause of the constitution. Repeal it. Now.

Good! I would like to see DOMA repealed. I have been a full-fledged heterosexual all my life, that's 50 years. I have reformed my view towards gays after having developed really decent relationships with a number of them. They are not monsters, they're human beings. Some are very good people and some or not, what's new? Behind closed doors is their personal business. Apparently, not all are are meant to reproduce, but all can contribute to life's process. I wont even argue Biblical scripture verses with addle-minded, self-righteous, hypocritical people I wont even dignify to mention by name. Facts, just the facts. You meet a person, you like the person, you become friends by hanging out, doing favors for each other, supporting each other through trials and successes. This person is someone you find worthy of your trust. The day eventually comes when you realize your new found friend is gay. You might say, "that's cool, I like woman with large breasts." Repeal DOMA!
