Poll: Gay Marriage Trailing in Maine

Poll x390 (Photos.com) | Advocate.com

A new Research 2000/Daily Kos poll in Maine suggests that the state’s marriage equality law would be repealed if the issue went to voters today.

The survey of 600 likely voters between September 14 and 16 posed two questions pertaining to marriage equality, according to Daily Kos. In each instance, a greater percentage of respondents with a firm opinion chose an anti-equality position, although a pivotal percentage remained undecided.

The first question asked whether respondents would vote yes or no on Question 1, the “people’s veto” on the November ballot that would repeal the marriage equality bill passed by legislators and signed into law by Gov. John Baldacci this spring.

According to Daily Kos, 48% of respondents said they would vote yes on the repeal, 46% would vote no, and 6% were undecided.

The second question asked, “Regardless of how you might vote, do you favor or oppose allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry legally?”

Among respondents, 47% said they were in favor of marriage equality, 49% opposed same-sex marriage, and 4% said they were unsure.

On a brighter note, voters age 44 and under, women, Democrats, and independents were more likely to support equality. Voters age 45 and over, men, and Republicans still need to be reached.

The poll has a margin of error of 4%.

Bruce and all: It is not true that the Knights gave hundreds of thousands to protect marriage in California. The Knights gave millions to protect marriage in California. And the millions the Knights gave to protect marriage in California, was the least of what they gave. You need to have been on the front lines, seeing the Knights getting phone calls from people and then loading up their cars and trucks with posters and running them all over the State so that people could replace the ones vandalized and stolen off their lawns by the opposition..... You need to have been there, and then you would know. There is no chance whatever the anti-marriage forces will win in Maine. It won't be close. We were ten points down at this point in California, and we won by about as much as Barack won over John McCain. There is no chance at all that mothers and fathers will ever surrender their children to the indoctrination of the pseudo-marriage crowd. Count on it.

To all the folk outside of Maine who somehow feel they know what is happening here: We are working very hard to win this campaign. Yes, the c. church has spent hundreds of thousands on lies filling the airwaves, but there are thousands of Mainers on our side. We have a well-run campaign, and the lessons learned from Prop 8 are being heeded here. We welcome anyone from out of state to send money (ProtectMaineEquality.org) or come volunteer for a week. Yes! this is not just about marriage, not just about Maine, it is about all of us. Share the battle, because the battle will continue until we win. Join us in the fight! Lew Alessio

Everyone reading this needs to get out either; either online, in person, or on the phone, and put the word out. The Catholic Church and other Anti-Marriage/Equality groups have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of out-of-state funds to see Marriage defeated in Maine. Everyone needs to do all they can do help inform and educate. This affects just more than just Maine, but many other states as well.

Yeah if Cali voted against same-sex marriage Maine will too - it's much more conservative there.

We want the State of Maine to allow Samesex marriage, so that way three states can work together like New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. So that`s how i see it in that way.

Given the margin of error, marriage equality isn't trailing, it's dead even. Also not great news that it could go either way, but a more accurate reading of the poll data.

I'd love to see Stephen King do an ad for equality. King is generally for progressive causes, and I believe he would be for this one as well. I think he could really help tip the balance. After all, nobody knows Maine like King does. His book "It" really helped to fight against hate of all kinds - the evil clown was an archetype that represented racism, homophobia, and any other form of bigotry. The book basically exposed the ugly face of bigotry for all to see - that is, that hate, like that clown, is truly ugly and repulsive beyond all description, antithetical to all the "better angels of our natures." King knows how to unmask evil of all kinds, including that of homophobia. If the voters in Maine can put the anti-equality forces in their proper context, as belonging on the same level of villainy as the clown in "It" then they will reject this discriminatory ballot out of hand. King can be the catalyst that protects equality in Maine.
