NOM Pres. Predicts Repeal of Maine Gay Marriage

Maggie Gallagher, president of the National Organization for Marriage, said on Friday that she believed gay rights opponents would succeed in their effort to overturn the marriage equality law in Maine.

Gallagher spoke with David Weigel of The Washington Independent at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C., where she introduced former Miss California and summit speaker Carrie Prejean.

“I’m pretty confident that, as in California, we’re going to win,” said Gallagher, according to The Washington Independent. “We’re in much better shape in Maine than we were in California at a similar point. We were 10 points down on September 1, 2008, and we won. I saw a poll yesterday that had us up two points in Maine.”

Last week, a Research 2000/Daily Kos poll showed overall support for the measure to overturn marriage equality, known as Question 1, slightly in the lead, with potentially decisive percentages of respondents saying they were unsure how they will vote in November.

Gallagher also took the opportunity to dig at the first television advertisement in support of marriage equality, released by the group Equality Maine last month.

“I think that ad is not very effective,” she said. “I think that’s a very soft-focus, nice, pleasant ad, but I don’t think it changed any minds one way or another. If I was them, I wouldn’t be spending money there.”

You know, having watched entirely too many of these anti-equality videos, I've noticed a running theme. It's all mood-music and dramatic voice-overs. And vague comments about how "gay marriage will affect you and your family". Seriously. That's all they've got? HOW are people buying into this? It doesn't stand up to even the most cursory inspection. These anti-equality groups make vaguely spooky statements, but never actually back them up with anything even remotely resembling an example. What.. what the hell? Seriously? THESE are the people who are winning the fight? HOW?!

This is so sad coming from an unwed mother. How would she like if unwed mothers were forced to give up their babies or not allowed to marry. To her this is all about money. In 2002 and 2003, she received tens of thousands of dollars from the Dept of Health and Human Services for helping GW promote the healthy marriage initiative. She testified before congress in favor of the initiative but never disclosed the payments.

Ok all the queens on here that don't have a politically sophisticated argument and are just talking about how she looks are tiresome. First of all for those of you who are men, none of you have the right to make comments about women about their looks as much pressure that is put on women to be perfect and a hell of a lot of other shit they have to put up with dealing with men. It's such a patriarchal attitude of entitlement to take such liberties. Let's stick to the subject and stop being petty, this isn't America's next top model.
