Congressman: Gay Marriage Is "Socialism"

Congressman Steve King x390 (.gov) | Advocate.com

In an extreme formulation of a tired antigay argument, U.S. representative Steve King (pictured) of Iowa said that same-sex marriage is a “purely socialist concept” during an interview with a conservative radio network on Wednesday.

King, a Republican who represents the 5th congressional district, spoke with Greg Corumbus of Radio America for World Net Daily about his concern that congressional Democrats and the Obama administration are “pushing closer and closer” to repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act.

Unsatisfied with comparing the prospect of same-sex marriage to the legalization of incest, as opponents such as former senator Rick Santorum have done, King said he wanted to “take this along the rationale even further.”

“If relationships between individuals cannot be prohibited by the state legislature, then there’s no ban that can actually be constitutional that would ban group marriage, and it wouldn’t have to be for reasons of, let me say, love or lust, it could be reasons of profitability or avoiding taxes or accessing benefits,” King said.

“So in the end, this is something that has to come with a, if there’s a push for a socialist society, a society where the foundations of individual rights and liberties are undermined and everybody is thrown together living collectively off one pot of resources earned by everyone; this is one of the goals they have to go through is same-sex marriage because it has to plow through marriage in order to get to their goal,” he said.

“Not only is it a radical social idea, it is a purely socialist concept in the final analysis,” King said.

Throughout history straight marriages have been used to let families protect property through inheritance and to secure business links. So you could say that straight marriage is capitalist. Socialism is about the state helping people to get more equal treatment and opportunity. In some countries that means taxing the rich more, taxing the poor less and providing more subsidies to services and benefits for people who can't get work or who are too ill to work. If gay marriage is more about equality than about property, then maybe it is socialist rather than capitalist. Is this a bad thing? Only in the USA which seems to regard the idea of the rich having to help the poor as a scary thing. The rest of the world doesn't fear the idea of socialism, even if its like Christianity - more talked abouth than practiced.

“If relationships between individuals cannot be prohibited by the state legislature, ..." This idiot Congress-dope needs to review the U.S. Constitution which guarantees freedom of association. It is the fascists and communists and (yes) socialists who try to keep people from coming together to form bonds. This idiot is un-American!

If you follow the representative's logic, the only way to ensure individual rights in a country founded on them is to deny them to certain individuals. Barry Goldwater, Ayn Rand, and others, regardless of their personal opinions about homosexuality, were (at times) vocal advocates for same sex marriage--based on the notion that the state does not have the right to restrict consenting relationships between individuals. To say that same sex marriage is part of a socialist agenda is an interesting argument--I suppose it was less compelling to the founders of the pro-capitalist movement, Rand and Goldwater, among others. These individuals, who, if nothing else, remain name-brand opponents to socialism in almost every form claimed to stand for individual rights; unlike the congressman, they were less willing to completely undermine their own principles and arguments in order to preserve them.

Wow that was a WHOLE lot of shit shoveling he did there. Ludicrous and poorly analyzed i swear these middle American republican douche bags lack all intelligence and understand NOTHING socialism?! please that explanation of socialism was so convoluted i felt like i was watching the scene in Knocked Up where the girl tries to explain where babies come from. I can't believe retards like this, and yes i mean it when i say retards though i feel bad as most mental handicaps aren't this idiotic, are the ones chasing us into the woods with torches. HONESTLY the majority of us gays are A LOT smarter and if not we can at least organize more strongly than these twatters especially in keeping with the fact that America is gradually becoming more secular. I agree with 'leftypower' how about we get up off our asses and work on something and not just bitch. we can win this we just got to prove that we deserve to.

Let's not just sit here and bitch on the Advocate's website, call his office, light up his switchboard, tell our stories and express our displeasure. 202-225-4426. He needs to hear from us. Why do the privileges and protections of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution cover his (allegedly) straight family, but they aren't afforded to our gay families? How would my marriage to my husband affect your marriage to your wife? Let's get active, folks. It's really easy typing away into anonymity. Make the call to his office, then call your own Congressperson to let them know you did so. Then update your Facebook/MySpace status and post about it on sites such as this. I just did.

I don't know why conservatives are so worried. According to them in a few years Jesus will be back, he'll end the capitalist system, set up a monarchical dictatorship where all those saved will live in a socialist society where everyone owes and shares everything (like the first church). Am I missing something here?
