Obama to Speak at HRC Dinner

BARACK OBAMA 200909 X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

President Barack Obama will address attendees of the Human Rights Campaign's annual fund-raising dinner Saturday night as thousands of LGBT activists descend this weekend on Washington, D.C., to register their discontent with his administration's lack of action on LGBT issues.

HRC announced the appearance in a press release Monday afternoon. Sources familiar with the president's schedule confirmed to The Advocate a report that surfaced on The New York Times website Monday morning.

“We are honored to share this night with President Obama, who has called upon our nation to embrace LGBT people as brothers and sisters,” said Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese. “It is fitting that he will speak to our community on the night that we pay tribute to his friend and mentor Senator Edward Kennedy, who knew that as president, Barack Obama would take on the unfinished business of this nation -- equal rights for the LGBT community, and for every person who believes in liberty and justice for all.”

Robert Gibbs is likely to announce the president's appearance at the White House press briefing Monday at 1 p.m.

HRC = Ineffective and Unaccountable. My partner and I attended the last March on Washington in 2000. During that event the HRC roped off a few blocks where vendors sold momentos, food, drinks etc. I read that hundreds of thousands of dollars were never accounted for from that event. The money just disappeared. For the life of me I don't know what the HRC does except perpetuate their existence. We have a very small organization here in Massachusetts called Gay Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) who are responsible for us having same gender marriage in our state as well as every other right our straight citizens have. What has the HRC done? I have no idea. Why are inviting the do nothing turncoat Obama to speak at their party? Pathetic.

This is EXACTLY why I don't support HRC. They're out for the greater good of the GLBTH+ community about as much as Obama is.

I agree with some of the other comments - the HRC is a joke. They keep giving scores of 100 on the Equality Index because they want more companies on the list. However, working for a large company who has a 100, I can tell you it's not deserved. When I contacted the HRC, they kept giving me a song and dance. Never did they reach out to the company to challenge them to give equal benefits for our families. We've stopped financially supporting HRC. We're as equally frustrated with Obama because he's not taking action. I'm tired of the pandering for our votes. While better than McCain/Palin, I was hoping for a change.

Barack won't speak to the people at the National Equality March, he doesn't want to get booed. Those of us marching won't be satisfied with just an appearance by The Man, we want ACTION. He knows that the HRC crowd will just nod their heads and murmur in agreement... perhaps he'll invite them to tea again, all the while delivering NOTHING to our community. SHAME ON HRC FOR NOT PUSHING OUR ISSUES - they are supposed to "represent" us in the Beltway! Shame on them for not helping the march. I never got an email from them about it from their massive ListServ...did any of you? Why in the world wouldn't they help by at least notifying people of it? (Oh, but they DID announce that they will have a large HRC march contingent, OH - and so did NGLTF, another org that didn't do a thing to help. Do they think they own the gays? Sad that both orgs have betrayed their grassroots. START DEMANDING EQUALITY! See you in the D.C. streets Sunday, October 11th. www.nationalequalitymarch.com

President Obama has been a disgrace for the LGBT community. He has failed to act in every situation that he has been provided. From the DOJ briefs to DADT. Would he allow civil rights be dened to african-americans to continue even for a week? I'm sick of hearing that he has more "important" things to do in these times. He is the President of a FREE nation that continues to deny civil rights to it's citizens. He made many promises and has not delivered on even one of them. I will not support another term if this inaction continues.

It is very true that we want our rights and we are tired of waiting. Washington and our nation are not controlled by PROGRESSIVEs OR LIBERALs. Those of you that complain so vehemently should direct your anger toward the moderate and blue dog Democrats. Those democrats andd Republiccans are the majority in this country. They control Congress. The Supreme Court is controlled by Republican appointed conservatives. Direct some of your anger at fhe real traitors to our cause - which are moderate and Blue Dog Deemocrats and Republicans. Take a lesson in civics - exeecutive orders are not always possible. I am thankfully happy that George W. Bush did not have unlimited power with executive orders.

@Matt: I would have capitalized a different word: "he's SAID, over and over that he's for gay rights". I want it to read: "he's ACTED for gay rights". I didn't elect "The President That Cried Equality", I voted for a President to lead and act for equality. We should not have to wait for 40 years or 40 hours for our civil rights. "A right delayed is a right denied" as MLK would say. @Greg: You call this cynical. I call this seeing through platitudes of empty promises. 40 years of waiting for just *one* federal civil right may make someone cynical, but it will definitely make someone smart and realize that "power is never given; it is always taken," says MLK. @wafuu: You can respect someone and at the same time grow tired of words that blow in the wind and demand bedrock equality.

Show him respect. There will be the usual soaring rhetoric, with many any the audience skeptical of the words. Nevertheless, it is engagement with the process at the highest level, and thus a real foothold. If you differ, do it with class..along with lots of money and a few really good lawyers on your side.
