Jon Stewart to Obama on DADT: Eat It

Jon Stewart DADT x 390 (Screen grab).jpg

Daily Show host Jon Stewart tackles the familiar refrain about President Barack Obama having a full plate, advising him through metaphors to get a larger plate -- and start chowing down -- in order to finish the side dish of “don’t ask, don’t tell.”

“I know that you have a lot on your desk plate,” said Stewart, “but as a thin man who smokes you may not understand the concept. All that stuff you’ve been putting on your plate, it’s f---ing chow time, brother. That’s how you get things off of your plate.”

He added that in the smorgasbord of problems facing Obama, who as a candidate promised to end the military’s ban on gays and lesbians serving openly, the caloric impact of devouring the policy could be compared to “maybe a little bit of rice pudding right on the side.”

“You’re the president of America; when your plate gets too full, you get up and get a bigger plate, mister,” said Stewart.

While Obama cannot overturn DADT - it is law, and ultimately congress must vote to repeal it or the judiciary must find it unconstitutional. However - As commander in chief, and as the executive branch, there are two things he can do while awaiting congress to overturn it. 1. Cut funding into the investigations of our soldiers' private lives. 2. Order a stop loss order that would prevent soldiers like Dan Choi from being fired during a time of war, even if they are gay. These 2 actions would basically end Don't Ask, Don't Tell as long as he was president. During that time, he can get congress to vote the official end of DADT. Executive Orders can be done in a matter of seconds, and should have been done 1/21/09.

It seems to me that Obama has all kinds of excuses for not getting things done. I'm waiting to hear, "Oh, uh, I was going to sign that bill, but, uh, Bo ate it!" He's all talk. Rev. Wright was correct when he said that Obama would say whatever he needed to say to get elected. He courted and received the gay community's votes with promises he has no intention of keeping. My gay friends thought I was insane for not supporting him. Now they too are seeing what I knew all along: he's all talk. Mister President, stop telling us to be patient and fulfill the promises you made to get our votes! We've waited long enough for equal treatment under the law. We won't wait any longer! If you're not going to do what you told us you would, step aside!

There is a legal difference between Truman's integration and a hypothetical decision by President Obama to repeal DADT. The problem is that when the US Congress passed the bill and President Clinton signed it DADT became law- with the full provisions of law. President Obama could no more unilaterally repeal DADT than President Dumbass... I mean... Bush 2 could have repealed the 4th Amendment. My point is, Bush did IGNORE the 4th Amendment in order to tap phones, imprison scores of people without trials, etc. President Obama could do the same with DADT. But don't we expect more from a better president?

I wish The Advocate would also post the segment immediately afterward wherein John Stewart's guest is Secretary of the Navy (and also the Marines) Ray Mabus. John brought up the fact that the Navy is just now allowing Women to serve on submarines. John asked who had to give approval for that and Mabus said it was just time and he made the decision to implement it. John then asked about DADT, that since Obama is Commander in Chief, can't he just end DADT? Mabus suddenly got this deer in the headlights attitude and said, "oh it's law". "That would require the approval of Congress." I wish John had pursued it more, but I think both John and Mabus recognized that Mabus wasn't exactly telling the truth and how hypocritical it is. As commander in chief of the armed services, Obama should be able to just decide DADT is finished just as President Truman integrated the armed services by executive decree. No doubt Congress disagreed with that decision at the time.

Thats what I'm saying! You wanted the job and made promises when seeking the job. The probems that were present when he was seeking office are the same as they are now. Don't use that excuse. If he keeps this up, he won't serve another term. I, and many others, will vote him out.
