Politician Wants .Gay Domains

Daniel O'Donnell, a gay New York state assemblyman, wants online cruising to be a bit gayer.

Specifically, O'Donnell (brother of Rosie) wants .gay to be a valid domain like .com and .gov. A group called the Dot Gay Alliance has proposed the .gay domain as a way of creating a place on the Internet exclusive to LGBT audiences. The alliance plans to use at least 51% of its profits for LGBT philanthropic causes. O'Donnell wrote a letter on Friday to the entity responsible for the creation of new Web domains.

"I write to convey my enthusiastic support for the application of the Dot Gay Alliance to secure, create, and operate the .gay top-level domain. I believe that the most successful new domain names will be those that have strong support from their community and that will link people, businesses, and organizations with a common affinity. I believe that the .gay [top-level domain], as conceived and proposed by the Dot Gay Alliance, represents the best interests of the LGBT community and will provide a viable structure for our community's online presence. The alliance's plan to use more than half of the proceeds from the sale of .gay domains for philanthropic purposes should be lauded."

Around the world, people are being harassed, arrested, and jailed for being gay. I like this proposal because it will generate funds to combat this kind of injustice. Have people forgotten that it's not so wonderful here in the U.S. either? I'm really surprised by the Go-Along, Get-Along (GAGA) mentality of some commenters. Will GAGA replace DADT as the new "compromise"?

As the founder of this plan, I strongly (obviously) disagree. Our community is cash strapped. We fight among ourselves for pennies. There are so many causes to support -- marriage equality, sure, but anti violence, helping to change laws in countries where it is punishable by death for being gay, the list goes on. If each of us automatically raises money for LGBT causes simply by buying a .GAY address, imagine the collective fund raising possibilities. Please read the plan at www.dotgayalliance.com and consider it seriously. Thanks.

I don't think this isn't something conducive to integrating the gay community to the rest of society. Instead, it's just another way of separating us. Otherwise, why stop there? Why not push to create an all-gay state? It did wonders for Israel, didn't it? No, wait, bad example...

This is the dumbest idea I have ever heard. I really really want to know who in their right mind would support this and what rational reason they have for supporting it.

and the point of having a .gay domain would be that it's easier to attack gay people? However novel this idea might seem, it's not a very good idea.

I am in total agreement with this past group of posts! This has to be the "gayest" (and by that i mean stupidest) idea I have ever heard! We would be seperating ourselves from the world rather then try to live in it as humans! As a teenager this would scare me from even looking at any thing with a .gay prefix, because, even if it were just an information site, it outs you faster then wearing a wig, heels, and makeup! Lets try to put ourselves with the humna race not serperate from it! Keep the web adresses the same and keep fighting for equality not exclusivity!!!!

Hey hey! Its another gay man who refuses to be included in some repulsive "LBGT" acronym (bisexual rights? are ya kidding me?).... and I have no interest in websites with a .gay prefix. I've spent a better part of the last 25 years working to be included as a gay man in everyday life. I've seen INCREDIBLE progress, and I've been watching as the final battles in my fight (marraige, adotption, serving our nation, living without fear or hate) get closer and closer to resolution....but only because more and more people have discovered what we HAVE IN COMMON....not what sets us apart. But along comes these sniveling seperatists who insist over and over nothing about our lives will ever be accepted by those not like us, and continue to suck up headlines and authority over the walls that divide us.......I'm OVER IT. Stop acting like stuck up Queens and start dealing with the fact that life isn't as horrible as you think it is. Time is on OUR side....unless WE start sliding backwards.

"A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both. " Eisenhower. We can't afford to make the mistake of forgetting what we are fighting for. Our ends have always been the same: to exist in total "harmony" and as full fledged members of society. The means, at this point in time, are our ability to purchase acceptance through political campaigns and mainstream media outlets. We can't allow the means to become our goal. By deigning to create a gay internet we misplace our new found power. If we are at war with the world, fighting for our freedom to exist, then this is an endeavor like a fence. Only this fence will keep us in and "the others" will be able to keep us out! It would ultimately undue progress. Thoreau said, "What is the use of a house if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on?" What is the use of a gay-internet if the neighbors won't invite you to their barbecue or come to yours.
