President Barack Obama has nominated a Minnesota policewoman to become a U.S. marshal; she would be the first openly gay person to wear the badge.

Sharon Lubinski is an assistant chief in the Minneapolis Police Department, where she has worked for 20 years, reports the Associated Press.

Other positions in his administration to which Obama has appointed or nominated openly gay people include the director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the U.S. ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa.

You are so right Paula- If she is qualified for the position of US Marshall, then her sexual orientation should not matter. Now if the President is stating that anybody can hold an office, then say I am nominating a US Citizen, which she is...What do you think?

Why does her sexuality need to be pointed out? If she is qualified and can do the job, that should be all that matters.

We're supposed to celebrate because a democratic president doesn't discriminate in his hiring practices? He didn't hire her because she was gay, so what you're saying is a big deal is that he didn't dismiss hiring her because she was gay. What an incredibly low bar we've set for ourselves. If a gay appointee is going to be newsworthy it has to be meaningful. As Dan Savage pointed out, a gay ambassador to New Zealand isn't provocative to anyone. Appointing him to a hotstile, homophobic country on the other hand would be sending a clear message. Kevin Jennings is a prime example. Making a gay man in charge of school safety sends a message that bullying/homophobia won't be tolerated. I just wonder if Obama will support him as the right continues to attack, or if he will abandon him as well, like he did Van Jones.

I hope she doesn't want to join the military. Obama would have to kick her out.
