Communities of Color Endorse R-71

REFERENDUM 71 02 X390 (FAIR USE) | ADVOCATE.COM

Thirty-one Washington-based organizations representing communities of color have endorsed Referendum-71, which if approved in November would keep the state's expanded domestic-partnership law intact.

Washington Families Standing Together announced the endorsements on Thursday.

"There isn't just one type of family in our communities. We are a diverse community, with diverse families. They all deserve legal protections and to be treated fairly under the law, especially during these times of economic uncertainty," said Estela Ortega, executive director of El Centro de la Raza.

James Kelly, president of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, added, "This new law also protects elders in our community who are in monogamous opposite-sex relationships but choose not to marry. Our elders are the rock of our community. We must do all that we can to protect them."

The groups in favor of preserving the expanded domestic-partnership law are as follows:

Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle
El Centro de la Raza
Asian and Pacific Islanders Coalition of King County
Northwest Indian Bar Association

You dumb-asses, I was pointing out that savecalifornia.com (on Facebook not the website iteself) is distorting Harvey Milk's life. I was advocating for those of you on FB, to become a fan of the site and post comments to counter the attacks on Milk. Go back and read the comment.

Shame on you Jessie. This "savecalifornia.com" website is not only full of hate for anyone who does not subscribe to your twisted religous views, but the operators of the website are cowards (as are most of its followers) because they don't allow for any comments to the so=called blogs it posts. Go away, your hate is not welcome here.

Savecalifornia.com is a hate web site using children (again, yawn) as a vehicle to stir up fear. Hooray for Washington, good will prevail over fear

Ryan, You are absolutely right. I did do a bit more research and found that "A "YES" vote [on R-71] approves SB 5688 [which] grants state registered domestic partners in Washington all rights, responsibilities, and obligations granted by or imposed by state law on married couples. A "NO" vote rejects SB 5688." (from Ballotpedia). It's a bit confusing becasue anti-marriage equality groups are sponsoring it, but the wording is such that the referendum is an endorsement of the existing law. Like a lot of people, I have gotten too used to the right wing sponsoring repeals. Sorry Advocate writers - keep up the good work.

@ Joe - Sorry but you are misinformed. Voting to Approve R-71 protects the expanded domestic partnership laws. Try doing a little more research. Take for example this article covering Microsoft's SUPPORT for R-71. http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2009/10/05/microsoft-donates-100000-to-approve-r-71

Hey Advocate, one would think that the nation's premier news magazine on GLBT issues would get the basic facts right on one of the most important election fights this year. R-71 would not preserve the domestic partners rights in Washington, it would eliminate them! Big difference. You really owe it to your readers to prominenlty post a correction - not just correct the article. Too many people, including Washington voters, may have already been confused by the article and won't go back to read a corrected verion.
