Morehouse College: No Cross-Dressing

MOREHOUSE COLLEGE X180 / Advocate.com

Hats in buildings, pajamas in public, and cross-dressing of any kind have been banned at the all male, traditionally black Morehouse College in Atlanta -- the latter rule an attempt to control what school officials say is a small minority among the private college's 2,700-member student body who are living a "gay lifestyle."

"We are talking about five students who are living a gay lifestyle that is leading them to dress a way we do not expect in Morehouse men," Dr. William Bynum, vice president for Student Services, told CNN.

Bynum says school officials talked to the campus’s gay student group before moving forward with the new dress code and, “of the 27 people in the room, only three were against it."

As a gay black man I agree with the policy at Morehouse. My mother never let me out the house with a Du-rag on my head and hats were never worn indoors and definitely not at the table. You should be a proud black gay man, just remember you are at Morehouse College! Would you be a Q, a Kappa, a Sigma, or Alpha and dress in an inapropriate manner? Hell no! Its okay to a girl, wear a nice suit with some heels! You shouls just show a little more class.

This is truly ridiculous. It's a piece of clothing. Assign onto it whatever gender role you will but God doesn't care. Men likely even wore dresses as well as women when clothing was first created. What is the Toga but a dress? There use to and may still be Male Kimono's. Seriously, if a man, Black, White, Asian, wants to dress like a woman that's their choice. We don't rip into women that wear men's clothes. For some men, they even consider it sexy, or just ok so it's also hypocritical. I actually thought it was great hearing there were Crossdressing men at Moorehouse as I got the impression maybe the Black community loosened up and finally saw the scar heal from White people(see doctored pics of Black men back in the day with makeup applied) where they didn't feel the need to be so over the top in masculinity. See Stereotypical, including Homophobia.

I am a gay black student at Wabash College (another all-male, albeit predominately white, school) and i feel sorry for the gays at Morehouse. Her, we don't have to put up, or pay with our own money, with the archaic system at Morehouse. we have a STRONG gay alliance that doesn't allow the administration to dictate what we wear when we are feeding the professors with our money. COME TO WABASH!!! you will be supported here! I have flourished and so will you, even if you do like to wear high heels! lol

I 100000% agree with the dress code policy. Just two days ago, I saw a HS girl (look like she was in 10th grade), walking down the street wearing MEN'S BOXERS. That is completely INSANE. As a person who has been in the workforce for a few years, there is NO SUCH THING AS FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION in the workplace (unless you are in the entertainment industry). Students who attend Morehouse is more than likely not looking to be an actor. So for that reason, abiding to Morehouse's dress code is unexpected. A male couldn't work in the White House, the US Capitol, Fed gov't, and many other places (private, public and gov't) wearing women's clothes. It will not be allowed. So I think the students don't understand the dress code policy because they really haven't experience work life. But when they do, they will discover that they have very little freedom of expression if they want to keep their job. AGAIN, I 1000000% agree with the dress code. Way to go Morehouse.

I think that the federal government needs to intervene to prevent such a violation of human rights whether it comes from Morehouse College or another institution. It is ridiculous for some black leaders to denounce discrimination when they are prone to inflict it on other people, specially young blacks.

Its a private school. They can do what they want. I went to a public university where we had a tenured professor in drag daily. But I also attended a private HBCU for grad school and its not the norm (even among the LGBT population, which there are plenty of), minds are closed and old fashioned, and they like gender roles defined. Its unfortunate if your a gal who likes her heels but it sounds like it should just be worn on the weekend or on ones own time. A private university oft considered a students workplace and how many (white collar businesses, which Morehouse trains for) allow cross-dressing?

I dunno, it's a mixed bag for me. I went to a private Christian school where homosexuality was outright banned and was an expulsion-worthy offense, and uh...lets just say I can't go back there anymore. Sometimes you go to schools with archaic laws because you're forced to and have no other way. So thus, even though it's a private school with their own rights, its still rough if you're a student that's forced into going there, or even REALLY wants to go there for some reason or another (like they have a great program, you get a good scholarship, etc...), you just so happen to be stuck at a school with crappy rules and you're LGBT. It's rough, yo. CHANGE MOREHOUSE! CHANGE!

I know my comments will be villified but I am sorry, this is a private school. They have the right to make their own rules. I dont agree with them; but dont see anything wrong with them as a private institution. So going there is a choice that each student makes. If they simply do not agree with this policy then they can leave. Its as simple as that.
