Charitable Drag Queens Upset W.Va. Churchgoers

A church congregation in Kermit, W.Va., is up in arms after a drag show was booked in town to benefit cancer research.

The Witches Ball, organized by veteran performer Lark Muncy (a.k.a. Ashley Stone) is set for Saturday night at the Kermit Community Center. However, Charles Parsley, the minister at the Jesus Name Tabernacle, has rented the same community center the night before the ball to hold a special prayer service, according to the Associated Press.

"In my opinion, it's dangerous," Parseley told WSAZ News. "They might recruit others." While he says his church's members are nonviolent, Muncy said that he has received threats that he would be beaten if the show went on.

The drag show is a first for the town of 200.

Jesus christ! It's rare that I actually think anyone involved in this kind of stupidity is evil, but that minister guy is pure fucking evil! It's a charity event for god sake! Would they rather have people die of cancer than have a drag show go on in town? It looks like it. Even IF recruitment were a legitimate concern, don't you think more gays in the world is a fair trade off for helping to cure cancer? This isn't just ignorant bigotry, it's evil and dangerous.

Well, I hope they do recruit others!! Because if a bunch of drag queens are doing something that is real to help people with cancer then how is that a bad thing? Only a church could possibly think so. What has that church done to help cancer? And who are they to assume that God thinks any less of a drag queen than he does of anyone else anyway, I believe that if it is true that God created us in his image, then who are we to criticize his work? I think the church leaders need to get their act together a bit and stop acting so threatened by other people and start embracing them. Ive said it before, people who practice religion the most, have the hardest time understanding the word of Jesus and following it. "Religion is a social disorder" (Bill Maher) I heard this in his documentary and it is the truth. Religion is holding mankind back from progress in every way.

I wonder if the Queens have considered whether the "Jesus Name" meeting the night before will recruit people? The last thing W. VA. needs is more hateful, hypocritical christians. Jesus, please save me from your followers!

They should have been just happy to say that they were offended by crummy lip-synching drag preformances. Now THAT'S something they could get away with, and I'd agree with.

I say let the show go on most of the times these bigots are full of hot air if you confront them they deflate and run away, and if they misbehave it makes anti-Christian churches look bad which helps keep people from supporting them which helps us in the long run.

Typical small town fundie fear mongering. What's really scary is that these people may actually believe that watching a drag show will turn them gay.
