Gay Couples in 2020 Census, Not 2010

U.S. Census Bureau officials said Thursday that concerns for accuracy have led them to delay counting legally married same-sex couples in the 2010 census. Officials expect the information to appear in the 2020 count.

The 2010 census marks the first time officials have attempted to include same-sex couples in the population count. Since the bureau's June announcement, officials have discovered roadblocks to that goal, reports the Associated Press.

“'Statistical problems related to the development of the 2010 census form and the evolving legal state of same-sex relationships led census officials to conclude that trying to include married gay couples in the overall snapshot of household marital status could yield an inaccurate number,’” said Gary Gates, a University of California, Los Angeles, demographer advising the bureau on gay issues, according to the AP.

“Instead, same-sex married couples will be added into the category for unmarried partners, just as they were for the 2000 census. But in a marked policy departure, the agency plans to make the data on same-sex couples who described themselves as married available on a state-by-state basis,” the AP reported.

Those of you sellouts giving cover to Obama are either liars are just plain stupid. It isn't about whether the data is significant, or valid, or whatever. This is just another example of the pattern of lies coming from this administration. Back in June when Obama's DOJ first defended DOMA in court, this "inclusion in the census" bs was thrown out to us as a bone to silence criticism of Obama's obviously bigoted views on gay rights/marriage. Of course it turns out that even this bit of nonsense was just a lie. Now you want to argue that it is no big deal? I'm sure several months ago these were the same people calling us "whiners" because we didn't appreciate what Obama had done by making sure we our counted. In the end, it is these self hating gays who would rather be part of the Obama in crowd then fight for our rights who are doing the most damage to our community.

Anonymized census data is often the backbone of much epidemiological research and other research (including marketing). The kind of candidate that might decide to run in a district may sometimes be affected or informed by census data; therefore, it truly is about constitutionally-guaranteed representation. As it is, many non-heterosexual couples are living in regressive taxation status, too. Thus it is very important that the BEST possible data be collected and be able to be accuratley reported and appropriately defined, described, etc. I worked the better part of my career on a CDC project site in a public health setting, where epi data was being collected on HIV/AIDS. Much planning on the front-end must go into the analysis, because the power of sampling is affected by what the 'a priori' or known conditions are. This is important progress! Whoo hoo!

You gotta love those comment writers who consider anyone who differs from his or her point of view an idiot. I read most of the comments because they always give lots of ideas on any given subject points that I hadn't thought of. Then and only then can I make up my mind or be sure on the correct course of action or whatever is called for on any given issue. What I think is that if you're married and are not able to declare that fact, that gives misleading data, so why bother to ask about marriage status at all? As a nation, as has been alluded to in these comments, we are slow to change, be it about social issues, health care reform, gun issues, educational reform and the like. The so-called most powerful nation on the planet, supposedly one of the most enlightened and thus potentially progressive is so regressive in so many ways. The death penalty, religion and on & on. We have great ideals but still have so much work to do; the operative word is work.

I thought the census was to count how many people there were for congressional representation purposes. I don't get why this is necessary. This is all bable and white noise. If you want to know how many gay married couples have tied the knot check the state rolls which are public information. Marriage, race, religion, age etc bla bla, is not the business of the census.

To those of you suggesting a boycott of the census, I'm guessing all of you missed the national coverage that the antigay bitch, Michele Bachmann, received for HER suggestion that people boycott the census. Or maybe you folks are just as STUPID as she is. Boycotting the Census does absolutely nothing for same-sex couples. And to those who are complaining because Massachusetts has had same-sex marriage for half this decade, bear in mind that there's only been 9 MONTHS during which the Census Bureau has operated under a (theoretically) LGBT-friendlier administration. So yes, the Bureau probably hasn't had enough time to work up the appropriate forms which will be used starting in about 3 months.

No, I can't smell the revolution approaching, actually. No huevos for a real revolution in this country, whether about gay rights, healthcare reform or anything else. We're just not mad and desperate enough about anything... the best we can muster is marches on Washington and angry town hall meetings, not that these are bad tactics. But let's not resort to hyperbole and refer to a revolution. The last real revolution we had in this country was the one for independence over 200 years ago. Don't see a groundswell for something like that happening anytime soon.

So people who are married or in domestic partnerships will be expected to mark themselves as single on the census form? Or people who mark themselves as such on forms which pretend that these relationships don't exist will simply be counted as single anyway? How incredibly offensive. I can understand a married person refusing to take part in this. I would probably do the same.

Homophobia? Broken Promises? Boycott? Some of the queens need to wake up and get a life. As far as I'm concerned, and I'm gay, until same-sex marriage is nationwide, counting or not counting them has little to no effect at all. Getting a poor count would always make the statistic suspect by both proponents and opponents of same-sex marriage. And you can't infer much from numbers in small states, nor states that no longer allow marriage (CA.) Homophobia? Wah, Wah, Wah! Poor little queens. Boycott? I hope the boycotters are arrested as they should be.

“'Statistical problems related to the development of the 2010 census form and the evolving legal state of same-sex relationships led census officials to conclude that trying to include married gay couples in the overall snapshot of household marital status could yield an inaccurate number,’” WTF?????? How hard is it to add REGISTERED DOMESTIC PARTNER, SAME-SEX MARRIED. Then, in only the states where it's legal do they count the SSM. Ya also gotta love the line, "...could yield an inaccurate number" SO THEY DEVISE A METHOD TO ***INSURE*** THAT NUMBER IS INACCURATE. This is pure, unadulterated, Obama-homophobic BULLSHIT. You idiots who voted for that religidiot bastard need to have your pink cards taken away and you all need to be publicly shunned.
