Sean Hayes to Make Promises

SEAN HAYES X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Shades of AMC's watercooler hit series Mad Men, Emmy Award-winners Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth are set to star in Promises, Promises, a revival of the 1968 Broadway musical about extramarital romance set against the backdrop of a Manhattan insurance firm. The musical is based on the 1960 Academy Award–winning film The Apartment, directed by Billy Wilder and starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine in now-iconic performances.

Promises, Promises features a book by Neil Simon and a score by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The original production was nominated for eight Tony Awards, winning two, and is perhaps best known for introducing the standard “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again.”

Previews will begin at New York’s Broadway Theater on March 28, 2010, with an opening night scheduled for April 25. Among the producers for the musical's first Broadway revival are Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, and Candy Spelling. Tony and Emmy winner Rob Ashford will make his Broadway directorial debut and choreograph.

Sean Hayes is a gay. It's one of those open secrets in Hollywood. Two of the producers are gay. Chenoweth is a gay icon. WHy does all the news on here have to be about gay politics?

Why is this story on a gay news site? None of the main actors is openly gay! Unless by publishing this story you're implying that one of them might be gay and in the closet? Hmmmmmmmmmm....

Seriously, why in the world do we care? We should be applauding the actors who have a pair, and live a proud out-life. Closet cases are just sad, and they are bad for all of us.

Why is this on the Advocate? There are no openly gay characters in this show. The show was written by heterosexual men. The plot involves a married straight boss having an affair with his female secretary. Sean Hayes and Christen Chenowith are not opening gay. Why is this here? I'd rather read about plays, movies and tv shows that include people born gay/lesbian and issues of concern to us.

They're going to have to find some incredible dancers to compete with the memory of Baayork Lee, Margo Sappington, and Donna McKechnie in every gay-boy-of-a-certain-age's favorite show stopper from Promises, Promises: "Turkey Lurkey Time." Nobody remembers the leads but many of us remember Baayork, Margo, and Donna.
