ENDA UPDATE CAPITOL X390 (PHOPTOS.COM) | ADVOCATE.COM

The Advocate has learned that the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee will hold a hearing on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act November 5, according to a Senate Democratic aide.

The legislation, introduced by Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon in August, would prohibit employers from firing an employee or refusing to hire or promote a person because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. ENDA currently has 41 cosponsors.

There are 50 total confirmed yes votes according to the Inclusive ENDA Facebook group, and 56 likely yes votes. 60 will be needed to overcome the likely Republican filibuster. You can see the spreadsheet here: http://bit.ly/14TDll

Marriage equality if very important to me but this legislation is critical. Many LGBT cannot come out because of fear of being fired. This would be a great leap forward for all those living in the bible belt and other regressive areas of the country. Start writing your congressperson and senator now. This would be huge for our community to have federal protections for the first time.
