Obama Administration Defends DOMA

BARACK OBAMA CROWD X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

The Obama administration argued in court Friday that the federal government should not be obligated to extend benefits to same-sex couples in states where their marriages are considered legal.

According to Associated Press and blog Joe My God, the Justice Department is at odds with the state of Massachusetts — the first to legalize same-sex marriage — over the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage on a federal level as being a union between a man and a woman.

Officlas with the Obama administration have said they feel DOMA is discriminatory but say they have an obligation to defend laws enacted by Congress while they are on the books.

Obama wanted and got our money and our votes! But his campaign promise about gay rights is a lie. DOMA and DAST are against the U.S. Constitution. I do not see where Congress has to take any action.

Some people really need to stop thinking that politicians are their boyfriends or that a party is a benevolent parent who will come through for you no matter what. It is unrealistic and infantile. If you think change happens by begging from a powerless position, you will be very disappointed.

Nobody is saying we should lock gay rights into one party or one politician. I understand what you were saying, it is not just about money or political advantages in my opinion when it comes to equal rights for gay people. The reforms, the passage of civil rights bills just won't happen under the ruling of GOP. I was just saying we should be grateful and we should not be satisfied with what has been done by Obama admi(Shepard act and the lift of banning on HIV immigration and traveling). I was just saying just give this guy a chance. The changes in this country have always been slow, but if we keep it up, keep putting congress and senate pressure, DOMA, DNDT, EDNA, UAFA, will eventually pass, but it won't happen now or the next year for sure. Maybe the next 2 years, or even sooner, who knows? I agree with Barney Frank's take on the Washington March earlier, it was just an emotional release for gays, it did not do much to put pressure on the lawmakers. I sense some similarity here,,

Chung, you think locking gays into one party or one politician's timetable is the right strategy? That's a strategy that ensures gays are taken for granted. Politicians of both parties will follow where the money is to fund their political coffers and ambitions. Gays have the time and the intellectual and creative resources to have more influence in the political process than they do now. And it starts with shifting the paradigm. Lay off the kool aid, Chung.

There is always certain bureaucracy, rules, and regulations, red tape from the federal government. All I see is bitching, whining, complaining about how Obama admin has not done enough. Yes, we have been waiting for all our lives, so you all have lost hope just because the white house has to defend DOMA???? You have lost faith in democrats? So what the fuck are you going to do? Change your minds and vote for GOP and get rid of the Obama? We have to be patient, and yet, at the same time, be realistic and hold Obama's promises accountable. He has already said he will repeal DOMA, so let's just keep putting pressure on congress and senate, and hold Obama accountable for what he promised us. You can't expect Obama to repeal DOMA right away, that is just pure fantasy. So all of you who think Obama is a homophobe just because he has not repealed DOMA. Think about what he has done, think about the Shepard Act and repeal of HIV ban on traveling and immigration, and quit crying already.

Gay people should take a lesson from Jews in the last century and invest their personal time and energy in assuming positions of power and influence. Regardless of the good intentions of a politician, they can't sustain mass popularity without catering to the mob. Otherwise, we will continue to be in this position of being grateful for every little crumb that they decide to throw our way.
