Maine Poll: 51% Yes, 47% No on 1

No on 1/ Protect Maine Equality X390 (GRAB) | ADVOCATE.COM

With one day to go before the election, a new poll shows that voters in Maine favor repealing the gay marriage law by 51% to 47%, virtually a tie given the poll’s margin of error or plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

The latest results released on Monday showed slight movement in favor of Question 1, the ballot initiative that would repeal the gay marriage law, since a poll two weeks ago showed the measure tied at 48%.

The polling company, Public Policy Polling, said the results indicate that the age of voters who turn out will be key to the outcome in Maine.

"The measure's fate could be determined by the age composition of the electorate on Tuesday," said Public Policy Polling in an announcement. "Senior citizens support it by a 59-40 margin while voters under 30 oppose it 51-48. Last year exit polls showed more voters under 30 turning out for the Presidential election than ones over 65 but we expect seniors to turn out at a much higher rate than younger voters this year, as is often the case in off year elections. If the electorate ends up being younger than we anticipate the fight could be even closer."

This is to Rob from Woldoboro... Read what you wrote.... Your response is to a comment that Jesus never said anything against homosexuality. THEN you wrote "Paul said" So, since Paul was a biblical homophobe, you have to be one too? Can't you use your own sense of reason? BTW - YOU leave the country... unaccepting bastard. Go live in the country called "Vatican City" in Rome where the popes had orgies and the church stole all the beautiful roman artifacts for its collection. I'm sure you'll be welcomed with open arms!

I did a little research and one polling organization reported that the % of Under 30 people against same sex marriage is much higher than those over 60. I was surprise to see this and wonder if it is true. I too thought the younger generation was more in favor of gay marriage. Personally, I CANNOT understand how this can be left to a popular vote. If interracial marriage were left to a popular vote, it would probably be illegal. Why would basic equality rights be left to a popularity contest? We elect people to do what's right. If they do... in Maine's case, and create a law giving a group of individuals rights, how can the popular masses take those away? This just blows my mind!

Being a Maine resident and having volunteered for the 'No on 1' campaign, I met a LOT of great people... Both within the campaign and in my contact with the general public. Many were surprised to find out that I was straight and helping to get a law (that was already passed) simply go into affect. While we ran an excellent campaign, one based on fairness and equality, the 'Yes on 1' campaign based theirs on what works best in ANY political campaign. Fear. Using public servants in campaign ads that have a known history for not tolerating gay & lesbians talking about things that simply were not true. Out of state funding pouring in from radical churches promising 'us' that religious organizations were going to HAVE to perform these ceremonies, even if they didn't want to. Fear. And why not? It's worked elsewhere, and I'm now disappointed to say... It worked here too. Allowing anyone and everyone to get married has NOTHING to do with fear and should have EVERYTHING to do with equality.

The reality is that with the backing of the Catholic Church, the Mormons, the Christian Right and organizations like Focus on the Family, anytime the chance to block or repeal gay marriage in a state arises, we'll lose. Our main hope is that the initiatives don't make it onto the ballot. These groups are rabid in their homophobia and will never let up their attacks on GLBT people and their families. The fact that this happened in a liberal New England state so soon after the debacle in California will only embolden them further. Americans in general are too easily influenced by others and simply can't think or reason for themselves. Until the more tolerant and accepting younger generation really starts becoming engaged in politics, gay marriage and GLBT equality will make very little headway in this country.

Fuck the Bible and Fuck the 53% of Mainers that voted Yes on 1. The Bible is not the word of God. It is the word of men who thought the world was flat and didn't know where the sun went at night. As for Mainers 53%, you are now on the shitlist with the other 30 states. You have brought shame to your state of inequality. God Bless my brothers and sisters in Maine. We all love and support you. In closing, GOD IS GAY! It is now time to ACT UP!

Again, America has voted, they hate us & do not want us to live like normal human beings. The majority do not understand our relationships, nor do they care to try to understand. They continue to hate us and think we are abnormal. This makes me feel like crap & feel like we will never be able to live our lives in peace. So sad, so disapppinted. M

I got a mailing last week from Obama asking for money. I said "NO CHANGE, NO MONEY. I donated $200 and countless hours of time registering people to vote for Obama because of his promises of change, especially promises to the gay and lesbian community. I will not donate to or take other actions in support of Obama until he delivers of his promises to REPEAL DOMA and DADT and pass ENDA. Stop defending DOMA in court. Read the unanimous Iowa Supreme Court decision re: same-sex marriage where they articulate the difference between CIVIL marriage and RELIGIOUS marriage. I promise to donate again WHEN Obama keeps his promises on these issues. Democrats may not have their majorities in Congress after the 2010 elections, so these issues must be handles NOW. The "fierce urgency of now" requires action by a "fierce advocate." What would Harvey do? Comment:

Antonio wrote that Jesus never said anything against homosexuality or gay marriage. This is untrue. Paul said in Romans 1:24-27 "Therefore God also gave them up to uncleaness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving natural use of women, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due." God's word is very clear and while their may be many applications, their is only one interpretation. If God had wanted a more liberal view, He would have provided that to us. Instead, His desires for us are made perfectly clear in the Bible.
