Gay Marriage Ads Premiere in N.J.

NJ Gay Marriage (Screen grab) | Advocate.com

Despite the election defeat for Gov. Jon Corzine, a staunch gay ally, television ads have debuted in New Jersey in anticipation of a vote on same-sex marriage in the legislature before he leaves office in 2010.

The two ads from Garden State Equality urge voters to support the bill that is still expected to be voted on between now and mid January. Corzine has pledged to sign the bill. Chris Christie, who unseated him, opposes marriage equality.

A 60-second ad that premiered Tuesday features Louise and Marsha, a couple from Middlesex County who have been together for 20 years, during which time they accumulated debt related to health insurance costs for their special-needs children. Their debt could have been avoided if they had been allowed to marry.

"I don’t know what a marriage is if it’s not what we have, and I want that legal recognition," says Louise.

A second, 30-second spot debuting Wednesday features a straight married woman, Emilia, who calls it “absurd, loco” that same-sex couples cannot marry as she can.

Yes! Finally some aggressive adds. This is what we need, to go out and tell people that Marriage Equality will not in any way affect their daily lives or marriages. They have nothing to lose from granting us the right to marry, and the only thing denying this basic right to same-sex couples does is hurt us and our families

This video sets the perfect tone! Please show support by expanding the grass roots movement to get gay marriage passed... Tell your friends, family members, and neigbors to call up legislators to support this! At minimum, at least get the conversation rolling. It's now or never...Christie said he would veto any such measure. We must get it passed before January!! Also the anti marriage ads have been playing over 101.5...NJ's major radio station without any pro gay marriage ads on...please donate to this organization(shown in the video) so we can fight back!!! Please fight with us!!!! We need your help!!! We need all the help we can get but we can so do this!!!

The same groups who oppose gay marriage also oppose civil unions. What do you think the opposition to prop 71 was all about? That wasn't about marriage. The anti-gay crusaders don't want civil unions either and would only accept those, as the lesser of two evils, if they had to, because either one implies society's acknowledgment of homosexuality as an acceptable, alternative lifestyle. We see our struggle for equality as a normal desire to have the rights and dignity that come as a human birthright; they see it as a "culture war" being waged against their worldview. By granting equal rights, society repudiates their religious belief that homosexuality is immoral; they want the laws of society to uphold their religious prejudices, as well as their arbitrary interpretation and selection of which scriptural verses are the true word of God (why is it ok to disbelieve some bible verses, like that one about eating shellfish, or wearing clothing made of two kinds of fiber, but not others?).

cont. (Sorry) EVERYTHING is in the name. While a picture my say a thousand words, some words say a thousand pictures. THIS is the thing the right understands. Marriage as a concept, an institution, as a cultural expression is maybe one of the largest social concepts that we have. As small children we are set on this path by society as a whole. Weddings, movies, tv, music, advertisements, family get to gethers... whatever. If we want to be seen as equal, we have to part of the huge social institution. None of us with Civil Unions even feel comfortable with the label, because it doesn't MEAN anything in our heads, our the heads of those around us. Marriage, married, husband, wife... these are concepts as deep as our nationality or gender. Imagine if they told you you can be gay, just can't call yourself a man. Now you're an Idgit. Same rights, just different name. Marriage is what we ALL know. We NEED both. ur rights, and the right to mary. I know, I live it. It's NOT the same.

Many of you are missing the point. My husband and I have a "civil union" in Germany. People still don't know what the hell it is. We are still denied rights places and constantly hear, "Oh, so you're not REALLY married?" The lesbian who died in a Miami hospital because her partner wasn't "recognized" as legitimate had all the legal requirements and bigots still kept them apart and since nobody was sure what the legalities where, she died without her partner and children. This could have been avoided since she had the requisite medical information, they just wouldn't listen because they.. were ..not.. married. Nor is marriage a religious, right wing institution. By falling into this lie of the right you do us all a disservice. CIVIL marriage is the law of this land, not religious marriage. To mary: to join two things together to make a single entity. Not only does it have huge legal ramifications, it has a huge cultural one as well. Nobody aspires as a ten year old to a "civil union".

Val Thogmartin and dan W, are we dogs? I understand the exhaustion that sets in. But my advice is to go and watch the Milk film on DVD. Get your batteries recharged and come out swinging. We keep getting closer and we will win this. Time is on our side.

I have to agree with Dan W. What is in a name? My partner and I have been together for nearly 20 years. I want our rights recognized whether it is called "marriage" or something else. I personally don't care if our relationship is named after some right wing religious institution. I want our full civil rights. But again in this neo-conservative country we live in, a popular vote will never give us the rights we deserve! I am afraid my partner and I will not see full rights in our life time, but if calling it something else besides marriage works I am all for it. Heterosexuals take your bigoted religous term and stick it where your brains are. Just give us our rights.

Dan W, We will settle for nothing less than Marriage! We are equal human beings. I would rather lose, like in Maine, than give up. We will get marriage, just keep fighting. It's only a matter of time until the 5% that we lost by dies off.

I want marriage too...........but at some point we are going to have to realize we are just not going to get it. What we need is Unions that offer the same rights as Marriage......even on a federal level. Let the straights have their word "Marriage" if they want it, just give us our deserved civil rights.
